I taught Kindergarten last year and I stored their supplies of markers, crayons, scissors and glue sticks in divided tubs on top of their desks. I would like to reuse these tubs for supplies for the preschool that I am teaching this year. Is it OK to do this with Preschool. Do they know not to use the scissors and glue sticks unless asked too?
I wanted to do something like this, but my 3 yr olds love the glue. If they see it...they are going to use it. So, I just have to pass things out individually. I say try them out and see how they do. Each class will be different.
I have a coffee can with a fabric cover that has supply pockets around the outside and then the actual coffee can sized spot for supplies as well. I put extra erasers, glue sticks, and scissors in the outer pockets, and their pencils and a few markers in the big spot. It is beside my spot on the table, and I hane them their pencils, and if they need something from the other pockets they ask. I am using two small baskets on the table for crayons. (I conceded and went with community supplies...you guys were right! Much better! ) Anything else supply-wise that they need is in its own spot, and the leader of the days grabs stuff when/if we need it. Blessings ~ Sk
I have 4 year olds and I have one caddy with crayons and markers, and one with glue sticks, glue, and scissors. So if they need scissors, they are automatically getting glue and glue sticks put on the table. The first few days this is a pain and they want to touch, but after reviewing and repeating and rehearsing what we do when the caddy comes out, it is a non issue in no time. I say, try it!
I teach 3 year olds and I use individual pencil boxes. Each child has their own with their name on it. Each chhild has a set of crayons, a pair of scissors, a chubby pencil, a set of markers, and a glue stick. The pencil boxes sit on a shelf that they can reach. I teach them from day one that we only use them during work time. Wehn we are settling down form work time I instruct them to get their boxes and sit down. I have not had an issue with them using them at other times. I have plastic bins with no covers filled with crayons and markers, and some pencils and glue sticks availabe in the free aret area, but no scissors. The pencil boxes allow the children to get their own supplies so I don't waste time handing everything out , yet the items are contained in conatianers that close as well.
I have tubs for each table. Each ones has crayons in it. I have a tub just for glue and scissors. Those two only come out when it's time to use them. I put them on a seperate table and the students go over to that table to get what they need and go back to their table. This works really well.
I had table top caddies and I used empty covered food cans to store individual supplies in. Then whatever I wanted them to have, I stocked the caddy with those cans and placed it on the table.
I have table top caddies and the kids have been REALLY good about leaving them alone, unless asked to use them. I have mostly 4s. Just a random thought... I have learned that you must teach about using glue sticks! They love to roll the WHOLE stick of glue out and try to use that. haha. It;s easy to forget the little things sometimes!
I do the individual pencil boxes, as well. They're labeled w/ each child's name, as are the contents of the box: crayon box, glue bottle, glue stick, scissors (only in the 4 yr olds boxes for now), pencil w/ gripper & an eraser. The boxes stay in the kids' cubbies until we're ready to use them each day, and I spend a LOT of time going over instructions for what SHOULD be used in the box and what SHOULDN'T during each activity & we haven't had a lot of problems so far...
