Have to share my awesome news ...I just received a $10,000 classroom makeover grant!! I applied about a month ago for the Honeywell Got2BSafe grant (can't figure out how to add link) and just got the phone call today that I was one of the 5 grand finalists!! *end shameless bragging* New post on pg. 4 with updates :thumb:
I have a lot of ideas of what I want, but I need to really narrow this down to prices and exactly what I want: 1) A class set of clickers 2) Document Camera 3) Student Laptops 4) 2 Ipads or 4-5 Nook Colors 5) classroom furniture (more shelving) and I'd love a "pretty" teacher desk 6) LOTS of student books! 7) (maybe) Tablet thingy to write on the Smart Board...where it's like writing on a flat surface, but it projects to the board...anyone know what this is called? That's what I have thought of so far, quite a list This has been me for the past two days!
I think you may be talking about an Elmo projector. I know a teacher a couple years back who got a huge tax refund and she bought a set of clickers for her class. They don't work very well! She considers them a waste of money.
Which brand did she get if you don't mind me asking? I have always heard really good things about clickers, so I don't want to waste my money on a bad product/brand. That's really sad that she spent her own money and doesn't like the purchase
That is AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I had clickers for my Promethian board (they were like little blue eggs) and I LOVED them.
Everything you have on your list would be at the top of mine as well! I think the tablet you are talking about is an electronic slate. I would love one of those too. I just blogged about our school's set of clickers-they are fabulous! http://gofourthwithowens.blogspot.com/ I would go for the iPads rather than the Nooks. You can use the iPads for so much more than just an e-reader.
what are clickers? and for the tablet thing, are you talking about a drawing tablet? I use them for drawing in my art room. like these: http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias=aps&field-keywords=drawing+tablet&x=0&y=0
This is sort of what I'm going for on the tablet thingy. http://smarttech.com/us/Solutions/E...n/Complementary+hardware+products/SMART+Slate As for the Nooks vs Ipad, the only reason i was thinking of the Nook is that I know you can borrow books from the library for I think 2-3 weeks, which I do not believe is available on the Ipad. I'm not sure how much the books would cost overall on the Ipads. Now...new Question (may be off topic) I just found out that they are sending us to Washington DC as well for 3 days, and I will be attending a black tie event one evening. I have never in my life attending something this fancy - my hubby will just need a tux, but I now need to find an evening gown. Any ideas of where to look? Specifically for size 0 or 00 (I'm very petite 4'10")
My library offers e-books that can be downloaded onto the iPad. You just have to have an app for it. Definitely look into it. Good luck on the black tie event! I would guess you could look at a department store like Nordstrom or Macys??

Congratulations! That is incredible! Your choices are similar to mine, except a few I already have! Clickers are AMAZING! I love them. We have the Classroom Performance System by einstruction. I also have a Smart Board, but I don't use the tablet that came with the Smart Board - I prefer the Mobi that links to the clickers! Incredible! Because you can use the iPad for an e-reader, I would go with that instead of a Nook. The options you have for that are incredible. Congrats! That is so incredible!!!
 Wow! That's fantastic! What grade do you teach? Please be sure to post pictures of what you get. You mentioned shelves for classroom, will you be redoing your room as well? Excited for you! Have fun!
Awesome! Congratulations! Isn't Honeywell great to teachers? If you teach 10-13 year olds, you should apply to the Honeywell Space Academy for Educators - all expenses paid.
Hey guys, I never gave an update report so here it is. At the bottom is a link to the video where you can see the video of my classroom. Here is what I wound up getting: 11 Ipads!!! (one for me and for each student) Elmo Document Camera Rug / Lots of Shelving Lamps Comfy Chairs and beanbags Skylights (not that expensive, but one of my favorite things!) Lots and lots of books! I decided against the clickers because I was able to get an app on our Ipads that turn them into clickers, and was also able to get another app to allow my Ipad to work as a controller over the Smarboard so I can use it as a wireless slate. http://www.got2bsafe.com/contest/2011 We are really enjoying our classroom and goodies! P.S. - BLK do you know where to go to apply to the Space Camp? I would LOVE to apply for that!
I went to spacecamp via Honeywell. Amazing! The app is due Dec. 31. Google it, or I think it is something like spacecamp.com/educators/honeywell If you need advice about the app, pm me.
HOW COOL!!! Ok, are the skylights just light covers? Those are so neat!!! I love that idea! CONGRATS!!!!
Light Diffusers These are called light diffusers. They are about $90 + shipping for 3 of them, which I didn't think was bad at all. They are really awesome, meet all fire code regulations (at least in TN), and brighten up the classroom! The only thing I recommend, is I would not fill an entire room with them unless you have a lot of natural lighting, because it does dim it out quite a bit. I have about half of my room in these covers, and it seems perfect! I think I'm allowed to post this link, but if it is against forum rules - moderator can delete for me. http://www.feelgoodlightups.com/clouds.shtml
