Well, I heard LAST year we would get it, but so far I haven't heard a thing. :( Sniff, sniff.

Anyone else heard anything? Also, how does it work if you transferred to a new system?

I was wondering the same thing! I've heard that we were, but nothing at GaDOE or the Department of Administrative Services (they distribute the cards) confirms it.

    Cross your fingers!!!

Hey Georgia teachers! I have a question:
I am a brand new teacher this year. If we do get the sunny money this year, do I need to do anything special? Like, do I apply somewhere or something, or do they automatically know all teachers?
    Thanks for your help!

Ga. public school teachers (at least reg.ed classroom teachers) got $100 of Sonny money to use towards classroom purchases, so called since his first name is Sonny. I forgot about that! I enjoyed that last year but won't get it this year since I moved back to a private school.

Our principal forwarded a letter from the DOE a couple of weeks ago. It said that we were getting the $100 gift cards again this year. I already deleted the email, but it seems like we get them the last week in July so that we can use them over the tax free holiday (the 1st weekend in August). We have a week to use them.

They go to the school principals, and if you are already hired for the school year, you will receive a gift card. Your school should notify you when they can be picked up.

Great! I'm still on maternity pay but I need things for the start of school and my pay doesn't go back up until the August check. Thank goodness! I really really needed that card!

I worked at a charter school the past 2 years, and we got it the first week of preplanning...but we started a bit earlier than Fulton county did...a few days.

I'll be at a private school this year though....

Yeah I was reading the "Board Briefs" from our school board meeting and they were talking about the "Sonny Money" and stating that they need to match it through the county. THAT would cover good portion of the "consumables" that I buy each year. The briefs said they wouldn't do it until next year if they did though. My question was why not this year when they stated in the comments that they know teachers spend alot more than $100 out of their own pockets for their classroom.

I submitted the question of Sonny Money to the DOE website last night. This is the response I just got back:

Your email to State Superintendent Kathy Cox has been received and is being addressed by Ask DOE, the Superintendent’s helpdesk. I am responding on behalf of Superintendent Cox.

The “Teacher Purchase Program (Gift Cards) ” will be in effect again this year. It is my understanding that the amount will be $100.00 as in past years, and the usage dates will be July 31st to August 10th, 2008. The Georgia Department of Administrative Services should deliver the cards to school systems around the middle of July.

I hope that you find this information useful, and please let me know if I can be of further assistance.

I'm glad we're getting it again this year... I just wish they didn't make us spend it all in one week. I'd like to have it throughout the year to purchase things as the need arises. Oh well, at least we get something. :)

Last year, one of the teachers at my school purchased a gift card with her "Sonny money". That way, she could spend it whenever she needed it.
