I need some advice. I have been debating on continuing to substitute for this year or to look into Private schools ranging from catholic schools to pre-school. I'm not sure what to do! I'm substituting in hopes of landing a long-term sub or permanent position in the districts I work in. I really don't know what to do. The plan as of now is to substitute this school year and see where it gets me. I'm afraid by next September I'll be in the same situation where I don't have anything permanent. Seems like everyone I know gets hired due to somebody that they knew. :/

    Same here.

I am subbing for the second semester and have applied for every opening in my field within an hour's commute (1.5hrs in some cases).

I recommend that you apply for all the jobs for which you are qualified: private, charter, whatever. Sub in the meantime.

    Are you willing to relocate?

    I would do both.

It's mid October; the odds are fairly good that ALL the schools have their classes fully staffed.

So I'm guessing that, while you should certainly apply everywhere, subbing will be more productive.

If your ultimate goal is to get into the public school setting... Your best option is to substitute teach to get your foot in the door and get noticed! All the best!
