HI! Soon to be sub over here! How long does the process take for a certified teacher? I received my nomination Thursday and put it my online application this Friday. Online it states my application is under review. What now? How long for the application to be completely reviewed? When do I get an appt? How long after my appt can I sub? This is in New York City. :help:

First off, I am subbing for Michigan through PCMI and it turned into a mess, but that was my experience. As long as you have everything turned in, I only had to meet with someone at my local ISD to begin subbing. Getting fingerprints and ordering transcripts took the longest time for me. If I had everything together when I applied it may have taken two weeks but because I was scatterbrained and student teaching it took a month.

I live in California, but the process did not take too long for me. I sub for two districts. In one district I applied online, was interviewed about a week later, and received an email the next day inviting me to the substitute teacher orientation. In the other district I only had to fill out some papers. They were reviewed by the sub clerk, and I received an email the same day letting me know I was officially a sub for their district.

I just replied to you in another post but to answer your other question, you can sub right after you receive your file number. You will need to set up your SubCentral account but the best thing to do is directly drop off your resume to schools in your area. They may choose to call you directly. Add your file number to your resume (mine is with my contact info.) because that is the first thing secretaries look for. Good luck! Let me know if you have any other questions. I have been a substitute teacher in NYC for a year.

It's a pretty long process in my district. You have to mail the state your application, transcripts and fingerprints. After you are approved, you may apply to the district online. It took me a long while because I needed 5 letters from past employers. After that application was approved, I had to go in for an interview. After that, I was invited to orientation. Then, I had to get my fingerprints done AGAIN because the state won't share with the district. I was then required to attend a behavior management class for subs. Finally, I had to complete several online trainings.

I'm sure I'm forgetting a lot of things, but they make the process unnecessarily convoluted for some reason.

Thanks all! This is how it worked out:
1.Received my nomination Thursday, email sent to me 1-2hours after leaving the school.
2.Submitted my application through the DOE website the next day (Friday).
    3. Received an email Sunday evening stating I was approved for a fast track event for certified teachers-earliest appt was Wednesday.
4.Wednesday I attended the event, my pic for my photo ID was taken. I was told it would take 2-3 business days to receive my certification and file number via email.
    5. Saturday I was emailed the certification and file number. Ready for Subbing :)
