Subbing jobs less and less frequent

hbcaligirl1985, thanks for the background. I cannot begin to understand the tragedy & sadness you've had to endure in your young life. I'm sorry you have to deal w/ this, but I commend you on not just sending your g-parents to an old folks' homes.

You're right, someone your age should be footloose & fancy free w/ friends, a boyfriend or even husband by now, etc.

I wish you the best. It's hard enough to do what you're doing w/ a permanent, stable job, but to be a substitute teacher is even tougher.

Oh my life has been far from sad! I've had a *wonderful* life thanks to my grandparents. I live in a beautiful house rent free in Huntington Beach which they will be leaving to me. My yearly taxes for the house will be $900. I have a car that works, pets that I love and friends who can understand why I can't see them and hang out all the time. Life is good. It's just hard knowing that I'll lose the two people who matter more to me than my own life.

Another reason why I want to find a job sooner rather than later is my grandpa is worried that I'll get discouraged and wipe my hands of the matter. Student Teaching was difficult enough to the point where I wanted to say 'screw it.' Him knowing I have a good job so I'll have enough money to take care of my grandma and I if he goes first--it will take a lot of stress off him.

As for sending them to an old folks home? It would be a cold day in hell before that ever happened. Grandma had to go to one briefly after she had knee surgery for 24 hr observation. Let's just say the nurse that I caught verbally abusing her when I came for a visit not only received the verbal smack down of a lifetime (that would have gotten physical if I knew I wouldn't go to jail) but she's also looking for employment elsewhere. I do not trust ANYONE other than myself to take care of them. I'd give up the inheritance in a milasecond if it meant them being healthy and happy and having a good 20 more years. I'm far to selfish to let them go at 80.

 

I'm glad you had some happiness in life too! I PM'd you back BTW. I'll inherit everything from my parents too! I'd also never wan to put my parents in an old folks home.

My grandpa is positive that I will and I quote "meet a nice teacher and have a wonderful life" when I get a perm teaching job.

In my district, this really depends on the teacher. From K-6 I am ALWAYS expected to teach. But it isn't hard.

In 7-8, sometimes, and pretty much never for 9-12. For 7-8 math, typically I have been asked to re-write notes onto the overhead for the kids to copy. For 7-8 English/history, I have been asked to read with them and discuss topics and answer questions.

In the HS, it is almost always book work, videos or handouts.

I never turn down a job due to subject matter.

 

In Calif, this is up to the district. The minimum is passing the CBEST and having a BA-in any subject. I have my BA in Communications and passed the CBEST and of course have my emergency 30 day credential and I sub all grades.

 

Maybe you will meet a guy at work. The upside is knowing he has a job and has hopefully passed a background check. Amazing how many teachers are married to paras, janitors, and other teachers in th same building.

 

Ya. It really is amazing, Nitch. When I was in 11th grade my English teacher was having a 'secret' affair with the English teacher next door. Only...you know...we all knew how obvious it was that this guy worshiped our teacher.

I go back to visit last year only to find out he had left his wife to marry her. Dundundun!

But yeah--him having a steady job and passing a background check = good in my books I always jokingly tell my grandpa I'm going to marry a math teacher so I can just point my children in daddy's direction for help.

 

I live out of state and have 2 bachelors degrees. I am studying for the CBEST as I may be moving to California. May I ask what is the pay for subbing in Cali? You don't have to give me your exact salary but range would help. Do you only need a degree and to pass the CBEST? In Arizona you just need a degree to be able to sub. Thank yoiu.

 

Fulwood, subbing pays a daily rate that varies greatly by district. California is a huge state. All of this is public information, so you can go to district websites around the area you want to move and look at the wages online. Love your enthusiasm, but that's only great money if the commute is worth it. With gas prices right now plus the wear and tear on your car from sitting in LA traffic...did you mind it for student teaching, or was it an effort? Huntington Beach to LA is 45 minutes on a weekend with light traffic...trying to get up there at 8am might be another story.

 

I've had the busiest month of my life subbing.

 

If it comes down to sitting at home, wishing she was working, or sitting in traffic, working and at least making ok money... I'm sure she'll chose the latter.
That's how I look at things, at least

 

In Cali (at least in SD, where I am), you need a
- Bachelor's Degree
- pass CBEST
- pass background check
- TB test (some school are ok with 1 year, 2 years, others want 6 months, or even 2 months old the latest)
- 30 day sub. Permit (good for 1 year, each year you just renew it). You need the above to get this. You basically show the county that you have all of this, pay a fee, and that's it.


Some school districts are more picky, and they want an actual teaching credential, but I haven't come across many.

 

Jen. It is absolutely worth the commute. I didn't mind doing it for student teaching and I didn't get paid. So doing it for actual $$? It is absolutely worth it. My car is a 2003 Hyundai and only has 73,000 miles on it. Since my grandfather worked for the HBUHSD as a bus driver, he made friends with the lead mechanic who does work on my car WAY cheaper than anyone else.

As for gas? Yes it might be a little cringe-worthy, but Gpa said he could at least help me with that. I just want to be able to have my own $$ to have some fun (when possible) this summer and help towards some remodeling on our house.

As for getting up early? Ya it sucks, I'm definitely a night owl, but that is what starbucks and lots of soda is for! =D

 

The range is quite wide, but I would estimate the average district in So Cal pays about 110 to 115 dollars per day with absolutely no benefits.

 

Newport Mesa pays $100...I think Huntington Beach pays $100 as well. Los Angeles pays $173
