I often wonder how sub teachers survive during the long summer months. In my case, I have a private in-home high school math tutoring job that helps me a great deal in terms of money when there is no school. But, what about subs who do not have a second income? How do they survive? Do they collect unemployment? Seriously, how do they do it?

I guess they collect unemployment or find another job...or someone's able to help them out!

I guess most subs live with someone else to share the bills.

I still live w/ my parents, always had. The cost of living in my area is astronomical. If I had my own place, I'd have to find a permanent teaching job ASAP & I guess find a retail or clerical or even try my hand at waitressing in the summers, but since I live w/ my parents, I can afford to sub a few days a wk & I've been back in school working towards my 2nd Masters degree.

I got a job teaching summer school at a local high school.
It's so nice to have my own classroom after all the long term subbing jobs I had last year, where one does all the work of the permanent teacher without getting any respect from the students, parents and administration.

Subs do not get unemployment in Texas as they are not "employees" of any district.

I am married, but am always looking for summer work.

I make little girl tutus that I sell to local shops and to friends. I used to own a children's hand-stuffing animal birthday party business, but it's been so slow lately.

Can the sub who don't get work assignment in the summer coolect unemployment? I didn't know that. I'd have done that this past summer.

Subs are not allowed to collect unemployment. This comes out of the districts' pockets, and there is no way they will allow subs to collect it.
That is why they send out "reassurance" letters at the beginning od both summer and winter breaks, "assuring" you that you will be offered work after the break.

The only rerason I can afford subbing is because I was fortunate to have received some income property funds from my late grandfather. Addtionally, I rely on mutual fund investments.

    I see.

I responded to your other thread on pay issue. Wow, you have been subbing for 13 years? I really wish you had not taken the second job for that day since you already got a full pay that day. If you didn't want to decline, just end the call; the system wouldn't take it as either accept or decline. I'd assume that it'd be considered a call drop though I do not know what affect answering the call and listening to the job description would have if one doesn't accept it.

May be, once you find out that it's for the same day, you can decline and choose the reason as working in another district. I suggest this because it could have happened that way. Or you could have made a doctor's appointment already and was no longer available for the remainnig portion of that day and can choose "Not available". Thanks for sharing that experience. Something to watch out for.

I did have to make a quick decision, and I made the wrong one. The call for the first job awakened me at 5:15. I then fell back asleep and the "offer" for the second job came at 5:30.
This second offer threw me off guard and I made a quick decision while half asleep.
Many thoughts quickly went through my tired head before accepting, the first being " Maybe the first job was half a day afterall".

I appreciate your input, especially since nearly every other respondent seems clearly on the side of the district. At least you seem to see it both ways.

I understand that many teachers (both substitute and full-time) must seek out summer employment just so that their incomes don't fall to zero during these months. I have one open-ended question for these educators: what do you look for in a summer job?

As some have already pointed out, there are opportunities to work as summer school teachers, tutors, and camp counselors. However, how do you ultimately decide what you would like to do? Is it simply a matter of securing a job that will help you pay the bills? If so, does restaurant work or retail work satisfy your needs during the summer? Or, do you make it a point to seek out paid professional development opportunities (i.e., educational workshops, internships/externships, fellowships)?

Fortunately, I haven't had to look for summer work the last few yrs or so, but if I had to, I'd kind of want something not education related, such as clerical work. Retail's OK, but you're on your feet a lot.

I see. One time, I got a call for a 2 hr job - pay is half a day - way in advance and so, I couldn't beleive my ears. So, I kept listening and listening by pressing repeat function and then decided to not accept it since I wanted to be open for a full day. That day, I got a full day offer at that same school. I don't like the school getting into the habit of offering me half a day.

:). The way I see it, it's not unethical to not take the second one that wouldn't increase the pay since there is no binding agreement when signing up as a sub that one must take the second job on the same day I already paid for the whole day.
