Has anyone gotten a sub assignment for the next school year already? I have one for as soon as school starts back for about a week and half in august. The principal wants to hire some subs to work with the 3 kindergarten teachers to help as like an aide just till they get to know there students a little since it is there 1st year in a school setting. Also , I have bout 3-4days in September already for a teacher who is goin on a trip to disneyworld for her daughters bday. Not to brag but when you are good you get calls early on be ready all you new subs! Good luck to any new subs for next year.

I have a long term starting in November. It is always nice to have some days planned in advance. This is my 4th year to have a long term planned before school starts.

Does anybody have any idea if the long term substitutes can get health benefits working in California?

That is awesome that you already know that you have some days set up. I wish I knew what was going on that far in advance. It feels like no one knows what is going on.

I am going on 3yrs of subbing this 2008-2009 school makes 3 yrs. This is the 1st time I have had something to lined up for the begining of the school year like this. I think since one of secretarys(also a friend of our families from church) told me they tried this aide for kindergarten @ the begining of the year thing. I think they might do it again next year too and if they do I am going to ask if I can be called for this every year that they do it! Then the begining of the year I would have a job lined up. The other years past it was not until prob. several weeks into school that I got my 1st call to sub.

I expect to be called for a long-term assignment starting as soon as school starts in late August because last school year, I was the long-term sub for the speech-language pathologist. My district is short on speech pathologists, so I already told the boss in charge that I'll be avilable for the following school year, meaning the 2008-09 year.

BTW, zenith, I haven't heard anything about CA subs getting benefits.

No sub assignments yet, but I'm volunteering at our Christian school for the week before school starts and the week of school, to just help out however they need me. The school/church is having some major repairs done..like new windows, foundation repairs, new heat/ac units...major stuff..so the classrooms may not be ready until the week before school starts. So I thought I'd pitch in and help. It will give me a chance to meet more of the teachers and that way when I do go sub, I'll know more how their personalities are etc. (and maybe they will request me first!) :)

I worked the first week of school in Pre-k (unfortunately the teacher's father passed away, very unexpectedly), but my daughter was in there last year and I had worked in there before and new the "routine". I was honored that the teacher was comfortable enough to take the full week so she could properly handle her affairs that she needed. I loved it and am going to be there Monday (on my own time) to help the class adjust to Mrs. Brown being there and me not (for the criers). I have been communicating with the teacher and have sent pictures with names so she will know faces and names. I am also booked up 3 out of 5 days next week for 5th grade, the pre-k aid, and the the science specialist. Nov 11 has been set aside for the Music specialist, and talk of April 5th grade field trip subbing has already started. And this is all at one school, and I have 4 in my list to be called from.

Zenith: I believe Los Angeles Unified allots benefits to subs after they have subbed so many days or hours within a specific amount of time. However, don't quote me on this..with all the budget cuts that may have changed. Check with their website to make sure. Unfortunately, most districts that I know of don't offer benefits for subs. I'm signed up with Long Beach, and maybe Redondo, neither of which offer health coverage.

I don't have any LTS lined up. That would be nice, actually. However, Long Beach uses a system called Aesop....which is utilized on the Internet. I keep checking it just the same to see if any assignments pop up there....the minute I see one I'm taking it.:)

A few of weeks before school started, I accepted a job for the first day of school at a local high school - for a special ed teacher. Then about ten days before school started, the principal called and asked if I would change that job for the first three days of school - for an English teacher. Of course, I did!

When I got to school on Wednesday morning, I signed in and went upstairs to the classroom. I asked another teacher why the English teacher was going to be absent for the first three days of classes. She just looked at me. So, I said - Because I know that the students will ask. Then she said, "Uh, I don't know why he's out." I thought, "Oh, yes, you do. You just don't want to tell me."

Throughout the day, I heard comments from the students about why Mr. L was absent. Eventually, another teacher told me that he DIDN'T GET HIS TEACHING CERTIFICATE RENEWED! He took a required class, but from there I'm not sure what's going on. Somebody messed up - either the state, the college, or the teacher.

On Friday, when I signed out for the day, the secretary asked me if I could return ALL OF NEXT WEEK. I said that I would! So, I'm curious about how this is all going to work out!

It was super hot this past week - and this school is air conditioned!!! Yeah!!!

Well hopefully I have a sub assignment if the darn people would ever call. When I called she said they was backed up because they moved the office, and would get to me in two days. I am trying to stick with it since I can sub for at least three districts, but I am giving them until Tuesday and then I'm moving to another one.

I just accepted my first job of the year. It will be a morning 1/2 day in the media center @ the school my kids go to. We go through Kelly Services and it's online. So far I really like the ease of accepting jobs. :)

I just accepted a 3-day assignment for this week subbing at a high school for a Reading/English class. At first when I saw the job in the que I was a bit nervous. It's been a loooong time since I've subbed high school. Still, I am also so relieved right now to be getting work already in the first week of school! :D So, I decided to take it. I actually enjoyed working with high school kids. I think for me, middle school was the most challenging.

I have been subbing since the first day of school - August 20th. I am subbing for a high school English teacher that has had a "paperwork problem" in receiving his renewed teaching certificate.

Today he left me a note, stating that he should be back in the classroom next Monday.

I already have four days (for two other teachers) booked for next week.

    I LOVE AESOP!

I just did my first sub today at a school. Half day in one class, and half in another. The school year here started 2 weeks ago, but I didn't have my TB shot done until last Monday.

Anywho I'm booked at the same school for two days in a little over a week from now another day with the same class I was subbing for today in October.

I don't have anything for the rest of the week yet, but I wasn't expecting too much since I just started. But since I have a teaching degree and license, I'm sure my days will be booked once we're deep into the school year.

I'm hoping that if I sub at this school enough, when a job opens up, I'll be consisered it. I know the Principal there. She was the Principal at another school where I interned at last semester.

I just got hired by special school district (sped) and have worked every day since the first day of school and right now I'm on a 2 week assignment with many more days booked. We have an AESOP type system which means that I almost never get called in the am. Yes I love that.

The best part about this job is that I get to be in the classroom with the kids and watch the teachers teach, and that's a great education for me since I'm working on certification. If someone offered me a TA job right now I'd probably turn it down b/c I love the variety and chance to watch teachers at work. Oh and I'm learning a lot about disabilities.

Hello ~ I'm new to being a substitute (I have yet to sub, but I am signed up through the superintendent's office and one district). Can you tell me the quickest way to find out what districts in my area are using Aesop? I went to Aesop online; however, I could not find the individual districts using the system...I'm located in CA, also. TIA.

That is a good question Learn2BGreen. I have never used Aesop before and this particular district uses it. My suggestion is to pick local school districts around you that you want to sub in, and just call their HR dept and ask for their sub technician, or secretary and ask if they use Aesop. I think most of the larger districts use it now. I think any and ALL districts should use it, it's just terrific! You can organize your calendar online, arrange when you want them to call you, etc. It's pretty cool.

    the ball is finally rolling:)

I finally received my employee ID # last night, and can officially begin to sub for the city's district. Had no luck finding any job last night and today, but sure enough, when I checked my email, there was a request from a Spanish teacher I subbed for last year,
First day of subbing is on Monday!

Are you using Aesop to find your sub jobs?

I have found that there are certain times of the day when jobs are posted most often. On the rare day that I have not lined anything up for the next day, I get up about 5:00 or 5:30 am and use the telephone to check Aesop. (I don't want to bother turning on my computer at that hour.) Often, I'll be the first to pick up a sub job that was posted overnight or very early in the morning by a teacher who is sick or has a sick child.

Also, other busy times: the lunch hour, right when school dismisses, and around 9:00 or 10:00 pm.

Dont know, but it's also an online/phone system service, so it's probably very much alike. Thanks for the advice though! I thought waking up at 6:30 was early enough, but I guess not:eek:hmy:. Thanks!

Well, got another sub gig with the same Spanish teacher. Apparently one of her parent's is very ill, and will be gone 1-2 weeks, maybe more.
I am very excited for the opportunity, but feel bad due to the circumstances surrounding it.
It should be interesting as I teach social science, but at least have the advantage of speaking Spanish. Going to go and meet with her tomorrow to go over things before she heads out out of town monday night.

EZLN1 - If you speak Spanish, I'm sure you'll do a great job - and have fun with your classes!

I have subbed every day since school started on 8/20 (except for today when all the schools are closed due to storm damage). I subbed for one high school English teacher from the beginning through last Monday. I was relying on StarkNotes to help me with Julius Caesar!! Ah!

Now I am back to using Aesop to get my jobs. I have Tuesday and Wednesday filled in for this week - and two days for next week already.
