Stupid Gallup Teacher Insight

    I "over thought" it when I took it and I want to take it again. Is that possible? It is asking me for a district code, if I contact the district and ask them will they give it to me? :-(

    You can try, but I doubt it. I would be curious to see what the district would say. I was told I couldn't take it again in the same district for two years.

    I do not like this poll. The school usually gives us the code from their website, but I'm not sure if you can resubmit answers. You have the option to redo it, but not to resend it to the same district I believe.

    Do districts really use this? How is it scored? I took one online for a large district but I really thought it was just a formality.

    I think you are right. If you apply to two districts that use the Gallup poll, you have a choice of retaking the exam for the 2nd one or submitting the same score for both.

    Some districts use a test designed to measure how success a teacher will be. They ask a bunch of timed questions that see if you car about the students' needs, etc. They review this test as part of the application process. It is a little controversial. I personally think it was kind of easy to see what answer they were looking for, but it is definitely easy to get nervous and overthink the questions.

    Well, I contacted Gallup and they responded quickly and said that no, I can't change my answers until 12 months have passed. Oh well. I didn't answer "wrong," I just did things like try to be diplomatic and say that teaching isn't the MOST important profession in the world, but it's equally important as others. Bleh.

    I said the same thing. Who wants to be without doctors, nurses, etc.? I know teachers need to teach them to read, but we need people in other professions. I took the test two different times and answered two completely different ways. I heard I didn't pass it from the first district. I never heard from the second district.

    I think things like that too subjective. Of course you can tell what some of them are "suppose" to be but at the same time, if thats not yoru belief, then you have a tough decision to do. Not everyone teachers the same way or believes in the same things. Does that make one equally better then the other? Perhaps on paper, but you still don't see the true nature of it all until you see someone TEACH.

    I took one once. Never got a call for an interview. I really HATE those things. I personally had a hard time answering many of the questions because there are so many what-ifs.

    It is a stupid test that should not be used for anything but reseach.

    In my district, if you do not have a passing score on this test, the principal has to get approval from a higher-up before hiring you.

    From my experience though, most of the districts that use these things are very top heavy as far as commands and may not be the best place to work anyway.

    This is what the Teacher Insight interview is suppose to be measuring. I had this info. before I took it. I thought most of it was common sense, but I have no idea how I scored on it. I don't know if there's a way to find out. Sheri;)


    TeacherInsight" Behavioral Interview Themes Some school districts in
    Illinois and elsewhere (mostly city or suburban districts) use a
    screening interview called "TeacherInsight" (formerly "Teacher
    Perceiver"). It is based on research by the Gallup organization about
    effective teacher traits. The 12 themes that are the basis of the
    actual questions for this type of interview are paraphrased below.
    Whether or not you ever encounter this specific type of inter-view,
    the themes are a useful means of preparing to discuss your approach to
    teaching in advance of anyinterview for a teaching position. Note
    parallels with the College of Education's list of Virtues! 1)MISSION-
    believes that students can grow and attain self-actualization; wants
    to make a significant contribution to others. 2)FOCUS - has models and
    goals; activities and strategies are chosen in light of these goals;
    moves in a planned direction. 3)EMPATHY - effectively puts self in
    other's place; tunes into students' feelings and thoughts,states of
    mind. 4)RAPPORT DRIVE - having an approving and mutually favorable
    relationship with each student; likes students and expects them to
    reciprocate - sees this as necessary for learning. 5)
    INDIVIDUALIZATION - spontaneously thinks about the interests and needs
    of each student; makes effort to personalize the learning experience.
    6) LISTENING - spontaneously listens to others with responsiveness and
    acceptance. 7) INVESTMENT - capacity to receive satisfaction from the
    growth of students. 8)INPUT DRIVE - continuously searches for ideas,
    materials and experiences to use in helping students. 9) ACTIVATION -
    capable of stimulating students to think, respond, feel - to learn!
    10)INNOVATION - willing to try new ideas and technologies; has
    determination to design, implement new, creative configurations based
    upon information, experience. 11) PERFECTION DRIVE (Gestalt) - drives
    toward "completeness", strives for perfection; form and structure are
    important, but individual students are considered first.
    12)OBJECTIVITY- responds to the whole situation by collecting facts
    and understanding, not acting impulsively; has "perspective." The
    interviewer will ask a few (perhaps several) questions regarding each
    theme area in order to determine if the candidate basically "has the
    concept." They typically are coached not to interpret questions for
    the candidate, but they will repeat questions if requested. Generally
    it is best to respond in terms of how you really feel or how you would
    react in a given situation, rather than try to figure out what "the
    right answer" is. The right answer to almost any hypothetical question
    is whatever you believe your "best practice" is or would be. Obviously
    every school wants to hire motivated, student-centered candidates.
    These types of "structured" interviews really allow the candidate to
    do most of the talking and, thus, provide the interviewer more
    information. The interviewer will be listening attentively, perhaps
    making a few notations while you are answering a question, so it may
    seem as though you are taking an oral exam, at least in comparison
    with interview styles that are less formal, or more "conversational."
    Make your answers as complete as you can in terms of painting a
    picture of a well-prepared, thoughtful, motivated teaching prospect,
    but know when to stop talking, too! As in any interview situation,
    make your comments as concise, focused, and responsive to each
    question as you are able. As you might know, Bloomington District 87
    uses this type of screening interview. So do manydistricts in the
    Chicago area, as well as other metropolitan areas in the Midwest and
    across the country. Some use it in 'mini-interview' form at job fairs.

    This sounds like a book called Teach to Your Strengths.... you register to take a Gallup Poll.... and it identifies your strengths. I thought it was kind of interesting, although I don't think school districts should pay to much attention to it for hiring purposes. You were only allowed to take the test once with the book

    I'm glad that you can only take it once in 12 months. I applied to 7 ISD's (2 more pending) and I wouldn't have wanted to take that or the other interview that I had to complete (can't think of the name right now) again. Once was enough!

    I have taken a test like this before for a local district. I didn't have to take it again for a different interview in the district this year. These tests are so psychological. I felt like my brain was being picked. OF course, there is a "right" answer no matter what they say.

    Fratbrats, thx for C&P this into your reply. I'm C&P it into word so I can study it more. I figure it can help with those tricky, canned little interview questions you often get. I figure I should use all of the tools I can to perfect an interview process, right?

    I just took this test. I've been an educator for 16 years and am starting over in a new state.

    Answers can be quite varied due to experience, subjects, age group, ect.

    So it boils down to 16yrs vs. a poll?

    I guess what that says is leadership who relies on polls probably are not strong leaders who can think for themselves.

    I worked for a retail company that relied on these practices. You know how many of those poll survivors remained or moved up?

    Zero, None, Nada, Zilch.

    I imagine many companies that went under was because they relied on a 3rd party too much and not on common sense of instinct.

    Wow! I don't even remember posting this! It was so long ago! When I was hired, my principal had said that I did well on the Teacher Insight. And, it turns out that it really does matter, at least to our district and another that I know of.

    I agree, 16 years of teaching should give you more of an edge than this test! :)

    I have only taken it once and used it for multiple districts. I also hated the question about teaching being the most important job. It does rank really high, but I love being a parent and personally I think that is the most important job. But I think making me a parent makes me biased :)

    Wouldn't that make a teacher's job easier if people thought being a parent is the most important job? People more or less breed than become parents. Put that kid in day care so they can still keep up paying for more house than they can afford and have a garage big enough for their SUV.

    I took one of these over the summer. It was required when applying to a particular districe. I didn't hear anything for weeks. I called HR & asked if they recieved my info. They kindly replied that they had, but I wouldn't be called for an interview because I failed the Insight!! I'm sorry, but what a crock of #$%&!!!

    Some things ought to be done.

    A class action lawsuit or create a website posting screen shots of this test and encourage everyone to answer every question as neutral.

    Other options is write to NEA/AFL to muscle this out of the hiring process instead of wasting union dues on endorsing politicians who end up hurting us through ideas such a merit pay.

    When an employer uses a survey, are they really an EOE?

    My district uses it and it cuts out 2/3rds of the applicants. They have to wait one full year to retake in my district. YEE HAW! Be careful:eek: and do take it seriously.

    KiteKrazy - I think if you look outside of teaching you will find many industries that have different appitude and personality tests prior to hiring. For example, I took multiple tests prior to interviews at the company I work for now.

    I understand the benefit to using tests like these. I just don't like some of the questions as I can argue the side of multiple answers.

    I got to take it again. I decided honesty is not the best policy this take. Funny how it mimics the problems with education by creating a blanket solution.

    ....(Fair) policemen, pharmacists, and firefighters as well.
    It's not the most important or most noble profession, (maybe in other countries, but not here) it's one of many valuable careers out there. I think people say those things to make teachers feel guilty for not overworking and sacrificing their time and lives for the "young people of the future."

    Same here. I've had to take it several times this year* and got really tired of it. Last time I did it I gave them what they appear to want, not what I believe. Specifically, I reworked my answers to indicate how anxious I am to have the students "really, really like me" as Sally Fields says. If the students end up liking me because of my respect for and interest in them, then so be it. It is a side effect of my approach and not the goal.

    * the gallup site would let me choose "reuse last test" then would administer again and again for different districts.

    Out district will not allow you to take the test for one full year. We lose about 1/3 of our prospects to the Gallop testing. We had a wonderful sub that we wanted to hire last year and were unable to do so because of her score on this "test". Good luck! Usually persons taking the test never know how they did on it. Are you sure that you did not pass or is this just a gut feeling?

    If you answered honestly, you shouldn't worry. Its probably best when taking such 'tests' to not overthink what the 'right' answer is....schools want to know who YOU are...Don't know how much stock I'd put into such a survey. My school doesn't use this screening process nor do we have online applications...we'd much rather get a vibe from candidates' cover letters, resumes....we screen from those.

    I didn't get an interview at a district where I subbed because of this survey. Considering how much I love where I am now, this is for the best.

    That's sad and sounds like a district that isn't worth working for. That is also rare.

    I think that is pretty standard where I teach. All the districts around here use the Insight test and all the districts will not allow you to retake the test for one year. You CAN retake the test if you fill out an application for a different district or you are given the opportunity to keep the test results that you have already taken. They say there are no right or wrong answers... these are just your opinions. This is pretty standard procedure though. My husband is in the Insurance field and his office also takes a form of the Gallop. :rolleyes:
