As I'm thinking about next year (I love to plan ahead!), I'm starting to think about how I maintain student portfolios. Our district requires a folder for each student in reading, writing, and math, with work samples put in each. I feel like I hoard too much. How much student work goes in your portfolios (or folders like these, if you have them)? Like one piece a quarter, etc? There's no hard-and-fast way to do these in my school and district - some people are like me and put everything in there, and others have one piece for the whole year(!).

I don't have an answer for this one, as I'm still student teaching, but I'm interested in what people say...

My students have four or five finished writing pieces by the year's end for their portfolios.

You might consider having students choose what they feel are their best work samples at the end of each trimester, or quarter, however your school runs.
