Hi everyone. I have a question. Today I subbed in a classroom and found out one of the students did not speak english. As a person who does not speak english, I had a really difficult time getting through to him. I tried to have another student, who speaks english and spanish, translate some things for me, but it took away time for that student to complete his activities. I am just curious, what should I have done in this situation so that I didn't just let this child sit around? I felt really bad and tried to look up some spanish to help him but I don't think it really worked. If anyone can give me any advice so that I am ready in the future, I would greatly appreciate it.

Lots of good resources at Dave's ESL Cafe (google it).

Was there anything about this in your lesson plans?

I have run into this three times. Two of the students only spoke Arabic and the other only spoke Spanish. It was not mentioned in the lesson plans in all three cases.
