I have a class of 31 students. My PE classes are getting a bit stale...actually they've never been great by my own standards. PE is part of my job this year and I really suck with it. I love my students and I also teach them Math and Science, so I have built a very good rapport with them. Thankfully, because that is the only reason my PE classes aren't totally out of control. I have never been athletic and I have a very hard time keeping track of things while watching sports. I also have a hard time visualizing games and understanding rules. I am constantly looking for activities that I can do without things totally going south and that the kids will enjoy and benefit from. The fact that there is so many of them also doesn't help because I want to try to keep everyone moving as much as possible. I've tried so many things and I need something fresh and new, easy and fun, challenging and cool (by the standards of a quick witted grade 8 student). Please help me fast. :crosseyed

I'm heading out the door for soccer practice and won't be home until late. I'll try to post some of my grade 8 students' favourites tomorrow sometime.

Thank you so, so, so much! I need to save myself somehow and feel like I can be successful in this venue. I enjoy the kids and would like to end the year having learned how to not just get through PE, but actually enjoy it. Looking forward to your post.

    Here's a quick start:
http://www.edu.gov.on.ca/eng/teachers/dpa7-8.pdf --this is a guide for DPA activities, but some are useful (and more appropriate) in the gym or outside.

Check your school for the OPHEA binders--they are full of unit plans and activities. They used to be on-line, but in my quick look this morning, I only saw them for order. I'll check at school this week as well to see if ours is gathering dust somewhere--I could copy some for you.

More later--have an early meeting, so time is limited here this morning.

Check out some of the links here:

The last 3 particularly have some good stuff; the forums at the last link have some great dodgeball variations (always a favourite), etc. Our kids are going to be starting prep for track and field next week--sprint and distance running, running and standing long jump, triple jump (always an adventure!), ball throw/shot put, high jump (only do this if you are a certified instructor!).

This week, we have been fortunate to have rope climbing apparatus set up in our gym for all of our classes to use (thank goodness for a grant!). Before the climbing, they did badminton and basketball. For our junior and intermediate students, the sports they work on in gym are usually tied to the school team seasons.

I'll keep posting as I come up with things--brain is fried and everything is coming through in bits and pieces...
