And no, that's not strippers, dancers taking their clothes off. That's Stripers, a largish anadromous fish found along the eastern seaboard and it's estuaries. Major asked and so...... I'm already planning my spots, my gear, and prepping my kayak. Funny thing, there's a whole river filled from shore to shore with ice. I'm not sure when the water temps get up above hypothermia producing levels but I hope it's before mid April. No wet-suit, nor cash to buy one could make me miss the run. Let's hope not. If I miss the season, I'll switch to waterborne photography so no loss of enjoyment. Anyone else ready to get on the water (reasons and purposes not restricted to fishing)?
I love striper fishing! My husband and I are in VA and go pretty frequently. We have kayaks too, and my husband also takes the jetski fishing (he has a fish finder and rod setup). We've actually had better luck striper fishing in December. One time it was so cold that the spray on the deck was freezing into icicles. --Representing for the women on the board that like to fish....
Early in the morning, yeah, I read that as STRIPPER! LOL But I thought stripping off the winter clothes because the warm weather should be coming! LOL WOOOHOO for STRIPPER SEASON! I'm tired of cold. I don't care for STRIPER season! haha!
We have a fantastic snowpack in Colorado this year. It's still early but I'm planning (dreaming) of wade fishing on the Frying Pan and Roaring Forks rivers soon. And later fishing the Lake Fork of the Gunnison River near Lake city.. Also, great jeeping trails near Lake City but they will be under 8+ feet of snow for the next 3-4 months .... especially the trails above the 11,000 feet level. Lots to keep a guy (or a gal) happy all year.......... And the striper fishing from kayaks for you folks on the eastern seaboard sounds great!!!!!! I don't have a kayak (at this particular time) but do have a canoe. Great fun!! Going to be a great year!!!
I love fishing. I live in a river town, and there are several ponds & lakes around as well. My dad was a big time fisherman, so I don't ever remember not knowing how to fish. Blue gill are my favorite, but I like bass & crappie as well. My EX wasn't much of a fisherman, but he was a hunter. He liked deer and turkey hunting. I'm not bad a scouting for deer.
Crappie (craw-pee) season is just unthawing for us. YAY! I fish for large mouth bass all year long. I have my own boat. My husband and I met online and when I read his profile that mentioned fishing ... I was hooked.
Kayaks are fun and very popular here in the whitewater streams. I love my canoe. Very relaxing and easy to take to remote lakes and ponds...
I have read about those stripers all my life. Living in Fla. we fish near the mouth of the Suwannee in the gulf for trout, redfish, flounder, sheephead mackerel etc. Dad made some good fish chowder last week from the mackerel. We call them speckled perch or specks in Fla. Important fish down here near Gainesville.
I'm actually from the Deep South, MS to be precise. My fishing buddies at home would shift back and forth depending on what was running when. My 'favoritest-ever' fishing trip involved a bucket of fried chicken on a pontoon boat at night in the Pascagoula river catching 80+ white trout. A few years ago just after the platform spill, shrimp were pretty much nonexistent so we shifted over to DOA 6oz artificial shrimp. Never thought those would work so well. We were in a brackish estuary and we caught redfish, specs, bass, black perch, blue gill, and sun perch. Great day then too. Since I moved a bit north of the Mason-Dixon I haven't really been fishing much but I really want to.
Every summer I get to go saltwater fishing. Our workshop used to be on a barrier island and wade fishing was the best. Now we stay on Grand Isle, so we go out in the boats. I have to admit, the most fun think to catch is sting rays. They fight like crazy. The guys don't love it because they have to get them off the hooks, lol.
Used to catch a lot sand trout in West Galveston Bay..... Lots of fun! Before the day was over, however, I normally manage to hooked into a stingray ..... Not so much fun ........:lol:
Like I said, I had the fun of catching them and bringing them in. The Wildlife and Fisheries guys got to take them off the hook. (They were usually good sports about it. One of them still swears he won't go fishing with me again...then he does. ) I caught a croaker once, he was cool. My best catch, though, was a red drum. He was awesome, about 40 pounds. It was way cool!!
