Does anyone know where I can find the class size limits for my state? I'm in NC and curious about the limits. Thanks!

I don't think all states have limits....scary as that might be! When I worked in Texas we could only have 21...but now that I'm in CO, we don't have a limit. :( I ended last year with 27 first graders and am projects to have the same starting this fall...with no paras!!

I think it varies by district.

In PA you can have up to 34 until mid-october. Then they have to hire another teacher.

According to the article, which was written in August 2009, NC has a limit of 24 for Kinder through 3rd.

After 3rd, there is no limit.

In TX, Kinder through 4th has a limit of 22.. but they're thinking of getting rid of it. :(

22 is the limit in tx? I taught second grade in tx and both years had more than 22. How is my school getting away with that?

texteacher--i think that the school can apply for a waiver from the state for over the limit class sizes, but i was under the impression the school had to ask you....

Your district can request a waiver which would then allow an increase of class size.

And if you don't have a union, the school district can do whatever they want. For example, in 1st and 2nd it's "supposed" to be a limit of 27 but I will be starting the year with 30 and will more than likely reach 35 during Harvest season with the Migrant students. One reason why I need to get out....

I teach in a title I school and the limits may be different than non title I schools in the state. In K-3 limit is 24 and 4-5 is 29.

    K-3 is 24.
There is NO LIMIT on class sizes for 4-12. They lifted it to help with the budget beginning with the 2009-2010 school year.

We're in the same state, same grade, and yet our classrooms will be drastically different places - I have 19 on my roster, and 1 of those has enrolled in private school and won't be showing up... plus one more is in the SPED room for most of the day, so that puts me at 17 for most instruction...

I can't imagine having almost double that!

I originally asked this and found out what you said is exactly the limit for my county as well!

Our district won't allow any class smaller than 16.

    Hence Kira's 1st grade class of 30.

I'm in a T1 school in VA, and K-3 our cap is 22 for this year... however our 4th grades are currently at 29 each, and we are still a month away from the start of school!

I think my district has always set the limits-I don't know what it is for the state. But we can have 35 before they get a new teacher. Our 4th grade classes had 34 last year. Luckily, the most I've had is 28.

I'm a little worried about registration tomorrow. Right now we only have 2 third grade classes, but there were 3 second grade classes last year. So registration is going to tell us if we can hire someone else. I'm worried because it always seems to fall right around the high number for 2 classes. So we'll probably have 69 kids register, or something like that. But a lot of them tend to forget to register, or come to the base late, so we usually have at least 10 register after registration.

Poor me who gets 29 kids next year! With my room, 24 is pushing it... 27 this year...
