Have you read Stargirl by Spinelli? I found 4 copies of the book at Goodwill today and wondered about it. I have not read it...wondered if it was a good one to have in the classroom.
I am interested to see the response to this thread... I bought a small group set from scholastic this year and didn't use it because I hadn't read it either. You will have to pm me which goodwill you went to. I have my favorites as far as books go. I also love a few of the local used book stores.
It's a great story about being different. Star Girl will be a wonderful addition to your class library. I'm jealous. I never find really good books at my Goodwill. BTW, what part of TN are you ladies in? I'm in West Tn.
I hate that they have the books so expensive. At mine, the kids books are 1.49. In Texas (where I am from) they used to be .25, and now they are .50. I still find tons more things. Yesterday I found a class set of the first Harry Potter novels- each one was 1.49. NO thanks!!! (Yes, I am cheap!)
I have not read it but a fellow 6th grade teacher used that book for a lit circle group this past year. As far as I know both she and the students liked it. I started reading Eggs by him but had to return it to the person I borrowed it from before I finished. What I got to I liked though.
The Goodwill's here (Denver, CO) will let you fill a paperbag for $10 just by telling them you are a teacher.
I LOVE the book Stargirl. There are lots of discussions to be had about it. I think it is a very rich book for a lit circle or a whole class set (if you happen to come across 20 more.) It would be one of my top choices if I taught 5th or 6th grade.
I just subbed at a school this year where the 7th grade language arts teacher used Stargirl as a read aloud in class. I know the kids enjoyed it...and they had a lot of good discussions, too.
I used it as a read aloud this past year for my sixth graders. It is a book that both boys and girls easily relate to. It was one of their favorite read alouds of the year. I will definitely use it again.
I loved that book when we used it in a class. This summer, a teacher is also using the book. Its a great book to read.
Someof my kids have read this and liked it, but I think I will read it aloud this year. Thanks for the info on it, everybody.
Do any of you have an Ollie's near you? I was there today, and they had multiple copies of Stargirl for $1.50 each (new), but they also are running "Ollie's Days" promotions where everything is another 20% off. They also had multiple copies of Hoot and Flush and The Princess Diaries...for around the same price. I got (for my own daughter) the Princess Diaries boxed set for $3. Kim
My neice read that 2 yrs ago... they had to do a powerpoint presentation or something...she started working on it up here.
I love Stargirl! It is a great book about individuality, and the kids really enjoy it. It is great for inspiring discussion as well. Highly recommend!
Stargirl is my hero. Seriously. Sometimes I think about her when I'm feeling really self conscious. The sequel is equally amazing: Love, Stargirl. I found some of the themes of love to be a bit mature for my fifth graders (I'm super careful not to promote 'going out'), but I downplayed those and upplayed the unique-value.
