To test my kids' spelling levels I use Words THeir Way. I think it is by Bear. Its mostly a book about word study, but I incoperate that into spelling and use the test. It goes from preschool to adult..

I teach middle school life skills.

I've used everything from Dolch words to the District spelling program to decide on my words. This year, I switch from spelling test to vocabulary. I decided that it didn't matter if the kids could spell the words at this point in their life but I wanted them to know what they mean.

I use the green version of the brigance for my triennial evaluations.

I'm starting spelling in my life skills classroom this 9 weeks too. I am using a combo of Dolch and Fry found online for free, these are pretty good functional words my higher learners can use and I also like to throw in some Edmark functional words. The Green Brigance is good too.
