Oh my goodness. Just thought I would share this interesting mistake a girl made in my class today.

The kids had a project due in my class today; part of the project was to create an advertisement for something that would've been sold in ancient Egypt. Here is what one girl's said (she was trying to sell "mummy wraps").

"Only 5 cents per 10 yards of rape
    FOR SALE
    MUMMY RAPE!
    buy 2 get 1 free
-we are not responsible for suffocation, dizziness, vomiting or death-
    Buy now!
    Not sold in stores"

    Yup.

A spell check program or component divides a text into "words", which it defines as a sequence of letters that begins with a space or certain punctuation (left parenthesis, quotation mark) and ends with a space or certain punctuation (comma, right parenthesis, etc.) It then checks each of these "words" against words in its dictionary. If there's a match, the "word" passes; if there's not a match, the "word" doesn't.

Ahhh, a good lesson in relying on the computer between your ears and not the one sitting on your desk :)

Always go back and actually read what you wrote. Relying an the spell check alone can result in embarrassment. I've been caught myself.

I had a similar incident while writing my histroy essay last year. At the moment I can't recall what exactly went wrong (it had something to do with bathrooms in the basement of an old schoolhouse). I am sure it was a good laugh for my teacher.

Actually, Word 2007 will. I'm sure it's not perfect, but it'll tell you if you use the wrong to or mix affect and effect, etc. But I definitely wouldn't let it take the place of proof reading. One of my writing profs had this hung in her office and it still cracks me up!

    Ode to the Spell Checker

    Eye halve a spelling chequer
It came with my pea sea
It plainly marques four my revue
Miss steaks eye kin knot sea.

Eye strike a key and type a word
And weight four it two say

It shows me strait a weigh.

I always show this to my kids and they tell me how hard it is to read. I tell them that's what I see when I read some of their papers.

Haha so true GatorGal. I actually could not figure out what this girl was trying to sell right away. Most days these kids are better off without spell check, then they might attempt to proofread! (Please note that I said MIGHT!) :)
