I just got hired as a Special Ed. teacher for an Alternative Program at a local high school. I have experience as an Emotional Support teacher but it was for 3rd-5th graders. I have a few in service days this week. I understand that these high school students have behavioral problems (some severe) and most are below grade level.

I will be in the room all day with the students while core subjects teachers rotate in the room each day. This will require co-teaching with the regular ed. teachers.

Any ideas on how to set up the classroom? I'm not sure what kinds of rewards systems to use since they are high schools. I'm used to kids and using sticker charts, contracts, prize boxes. I know that won't work with these older kids. Any advice at all in working in alternative ed. would be great! Thanks!
