Next year I've resolved to use more songs during teaching (for example, we sing a song now that explains equal coin values, like "Five pennies make a nickel"). Are there any good books or websites with songs for things like phonics, math concepts, and so on for young children (I teach first)?
Look up The Doubles Rap!!!!! It really helped my 2nd graders learn their doubles facts!!! I LOVE The Money Rap song!!!! We sing both songs during calendar time during the week and my kids know all their coin values, how to make trades with coins, and how to combine coins to make any amount! I am a big advocate for songs to teach concepts!! By the way, poems work just as well. There are tons!
Hi! There are a few math poems/ songs at the end of this website page. http://www.carlscorner.us.com/Poetry.htm
Mnemonic songs for content area learning by Goldfish. It's for grades 3-6 though. It covers science, lang arts, math, & history. I use it with my music classes & have students add beats from current songs to practice for the OAT.
Try canteach.ca - lots of songs and poems (from home page, on the right side there's a directory; click on "Songs and Poems.")
Do you have any of her CDs you'd recommend? I was looking at the Totally Math and Totally Reading, but I don't know if any of those would be too young for first graders.
To be honest, I bought Totally Math and All Day Long with Dr. Jean last August. Then I got switched to a 1st/2nd combo class w/ more 2nd graders than 1st. I haven't used them yet.
