My teenaged babysitter makes as much as I do substituting. I am happy to have a job, and lucky that in 30 days I will move to step one and get a retroactive balloon check that will make up for the fact that I am now being paid $70 a day, less than $10 an hour, to teach nineteen students a full curriculum. Every babysitter in my town charges $10 an hour to babysit. So while I was sitting in PD last week, I made just enough to pay mine to watch my children while I was there. At least this year I get that retroactive step pay. The district I was in last year didn't even do that. I'm happy to be teaching and have a foot in the door, but just had to vent. Something is seriously wrong when a high school student can make as much as a teacher with an M.S. for simply sitting two children. Had to vent--- thank you for listening! Teachers out there, I've been a classroom teacher, and I've been a sub.....subbing is harder in many ways so please find a way to show an underpaid sub that you appreciate them next week!
