Wow... Something totally crazy happened at work today that has me feeling really uncomfortable. As some of you may recall from my previous posts our 7th grade inclusion teacher is under a lot of scrutiny for poor job performance. So much so that she's been given a split position at my school and the High School and it's only digging herself deeper into a hole. She is clearly overwhelmed and is actually doing less work. As of now we are 2 1/2 inclusion teachers trying to serve 65 kids. (And the 1/2 isn't doing much).

Anyway so today our 8th grade inclusion teacher sends an e-mail to the lead high school inclusion teacher with a question about testing mods. The high school teacher responds back, but then there is a separate paragraph saying that the high school P and our EC Program Specialist (pretty much assistant director) want our 7th grade inclusion teacher gone because she's not working out. Suposedly she has been caught falling asleep in class and lying to administration (this is only day 4). Their goal is to get rid of her by before Christmas and have our 8th grade teacher take the split position.

Needless to say our 8th grade teacher was livid! No one had ran this by her and she already has a caseload of 29 here. She has already done too much work to switch positions. It was unclear whether they intended to fire our 7th grade teacher or just let her stay full time at our school. (Which would be totally unfair because she can't seem to handle a caseload of 13 right now). Our 8th teacher immediately fowarded the e-mail to our EC director asking if this was true and printed out a copy to show our P. She also replied back to the HS teacher saying thanks for the head up, but wanting to know her source as she was really upset about the news.

According to our P she had no idea what was going on and had no intentions of giving up another teacher. She tried calling our director, but couldn't get a hold of her. Then she got an e-mail from the HS teacher back apologizing and claiming that she didn't type that last paragraph of the e-mail. Supposedly after answering the question she was called to see her P for something and never pressed send. When she returned her laptop was shut down and the lamp by her desk was turned off. She seems to think that someone came into her office, typed that last paragraph, and hit send.

Something is definitely not adding up. The HS teacher is pretty reliable and has never been known to do something so unprofessional. Whoever sent the e-mail had to be someone in the Special Ed dept. I would hope that someone would not tamper with someone elses e-mail as it is a very serious defense. It makes me hesitant to leave Outlook open at all on my computer when I'm not around. We notified our director and hopefully they get to the bottom of it.

Now we're all worrying about what is going to happen if it is true. We both agree that if our 7th grade teacher isn't performing well maybe they need to start taking steps to terminate her, but we are hoping if they do that they hire someone else and give them the split position. I'm afraid of them giving the 8th grade teacher the split, not hiring someone new, and making me the only full time teacher.

I think the teacher is just trying to cover themselves for allowing sensitive material out into the open.

I'm sorry, I only got that far.

Someone sent an email saying that they're hoping to fire someone by Christmas???? Amazing. How unprofessional can you get?????

Whoever typed that last paragraph... and my money is on the same person who sent the rest of the email... probably pretty much guaranteed that the person will remain employed until the end of the year.

    Yeah... this is just... wow.

You have to ask yourself how realistic/probable the teacher's defense sounds. Someone came into her room and used her laptop and then shut it & turned off the lamp??? Like, come on.

I'm thinking the original email sender typed that last paragraph, too. Does the high school have security cameras? If so, the issue can immediately be resolved by reviewing the video of that teacher's hallway at the time the email was sent. The video should show the teacher leaving her room, someone else going in and leaving, and then the original teacher coming back. The administrators at my school check security videos all the time when kids deny doing certain things in the hallways.

Very strange. Someone else writing the second paragraph sounds like someone trying to back themselves out of a corner to me, but then again weirder things have happened.

At my school, the email would have been bumped to drafts after a minute or two of activity, and logged out of email after 5 minutes. So if this were to happen at my school, they would have to move quickly!!

Seems to be more drama with the faculty than the teenagers there. Sounds like a good mystery though!

That's exactly what I was thinking...If this really did happen, the person would have to have been waiting around the corner, waiting for the teacher to leave the room. I think the person who sent the email is trying to cover up a poor decision.

And how would they know there was an email there to tamper with?

Falling asleep in class? I can barely sit down at my computer for two minutes to take attendance without a kid calling my name!

I'm not buying the whole e-mail story either...that's very, very strange. Also, can a teacher even be fired mid-year in your district? That doesn't seem right either.

Thanks guys for reassuring me that something is definitely rotten in Denmark. I don't know much about this HS teacher, but I never expected her to be one to lie like that, but it does sound really fishy.

I don't doubt that they aren't happy with our 7th grade teacher and I wouldn't be shocked if those claims of her falling asleep in class are true because she doesn't really involve herself in the classroom when she's there. And as waterfall pointed out I'm not sure if she can be fired mid year. I think all they can probably do is maybe reassign her. Unfortunately, she does have tenure. I have no idea though how her evaluations have been and whether or not she's been placed on an action plan because she never talks about it. I just know that a lot of people are noticing her inability to keep up with her workload.

I guess we will just have to wait and see what we hear from our director. If anyone is lying in this situation, heads should roll.

That's exactly what I was thinking!!!!!! Obviously it will impact the OP if her children are being serviced by these teachers, but really, it sounds like something that isn't your business, that you don't want to be your business!

And the claim that someone else typed it does seem a little far fetched to me. I NEVER EVER leave my email open at school. No matter how fast I'm called away.

I would just keep you head down and your ear to the ground. Avoid talking about the situation and looking like you're gossiping or part of it, but do try to keep informed at the same time if that's possible.

That seriously sounds like a story my 7-year old would make up.

"But mom, I didn't eat that cookie! I don't know how this chocolate got on my face! Someone must have put it on my face while I was sleeping!"
