I learned about this book from some of my friends on this forum & another forum I use...just got it from the library and oh my...what a beautiful story! I am so excited to read it aloud to my students...it's going to be so perfect for our valentine's theme (but could really be read during ANY time of the year!) Anyways, what extension activities have you done with this story? crafts? writing? I'm interested to hear about it all!

http://www.storylineonline.net/ has a video of it being read.

I haven't used it in class, but I love the book. I think it lends itself to writing a card to someone they love.

Find things in the book that Mr. Hatch did for other people, make a list of things your class can do for people in the school - a sort of "acts of kindness" list.

You could make cards for a local nursing home or even community helpers - send a few to the post office, police station, fire station, etc...

I heard about it for the first time this year. I looked for it today at Barnes and Noble but couldn't find it (my libraries are not open today).

Tasha thank you for that link-now I have a way to share it with my kiddos!

For writing they could do the perspective of a Valentine-people get so much more excited to receive those.
