On Monday I have an interview with the Assistant Superintendent and the Principal will be in the room - I am so nervous! Background: -This will be my 3rd round (4th if you count the screening interview with the Principal a few weeks ago) -I have no idea if I will be the only one. When the principal called to say they were recommending me to the super, I was ecstatic and she said not to be too excited haha, I still had one more interview that would be at least 30 minutes (Bad sign, right?) -They called my references before I did the demo lesson last week. My references seem positive that they want to give me the job! -I did see another person set up for a demo lesson after me. She was wearing a spaghetti strap maxi dress though. The district is a small, rural one with a tight-knit community. I am not expecting a job offer Monday but I sure am hoping! (They have always called me the next day) I will have my portfolio (with a full copy for the super and principal) and wearing a suit with my hair up. I feel pretty confident about my ability to interview actually. I am just incredibly worried that they recommended others to the Superintendent. I am doing everything to take my mind off it but would appreciate last minute pointers!
Well, you've made it to round 4, so that is a good sign! the best thing to do is be prepared and go in as if this was your first interview, or if you had to fight for this job among 10 others; don't relax just yet. I'm sure you'll nail it.
A spaghetti strap maxi dress?? What was she thinking? Every time I've met with a superintendent, the job is pretty much in the bag. You just have to not blow it.
Thanks everyone! I am so excited - at least I will know soon whether or not I got the job, after 3 weeks of interviewing!
You will do great! It really is a great school district, and I think you will be very happy there. Knock their socks off!!!!
Thanks giraffe! Yes, I have fallen in love with the district and can easily picture myself there. I know things will all work out regardless and still filled out some apps this weekend. Good luck on your interviews this week!
Good Luck! I doubt there is anything we can tell you that you haven't already covered! I think it's amazing how many interviews for one job you have done. Around here its usually one interview and then you either get the job or you don't.
Thanks everyone! The interview was today. I am still against multiple candidates but they will make their final decision in a few days. It lasted over 90 minutes, although it was only supposed to be 30. It was the assistant super and principal. I am feeling very weird about it. His first question was "why the hell do you want to work here?" And the profanity didn't stop there! He just kept pressing me with questions, making fun of my suit (he was in jeans) and asking what bars I go to (I just deflected that one.) I handled myself SO well considering. I was quick to respond, had great answers. Towards the end I got frustrated. He asked how I felt and I said fine and I could continue answering questions. He said "Well we could keep going but I'd just be making stuff up!" I actually said (with a smile and a laugh) "You mean you aren't making stuff up already?" He actually responded positively to that. Even though really I was just frustrated with his weird questions and personality. He called me a goody two shoes. Told me to take my jacket off. Just weird stuff. I honestly don't know if I'd take the job if they choose me now!' ETA: The Principal just sat there and tried to interject when he asked something weird. She was very nice, and I liked her. The super was just
I don't even know whether or not to send him a thank you. It would be so fake and he'd see through it! (He told me the purpose of the interview today was to cut through the ******** and get to know me.) OH The best part was when I asked him what he was looking for in a candidate. He said "Not a redhead!" (I am.) Then he said "It's like that 1950's court case about porn where the guy had to define porn and he said he just knows it when he sees it. I'll just know when I find the right person for this job." :\
It is unbelievable how one sided professionalism can be. I once had an interview where the guy kept picking up my résumé, throwing it back down with disgust, dropping F-bombs and - wait for it- constantly cleaning his ears with his keys! It was like he was trying to start his head! I did not accept that offer. You would almost never see the superintendent. Try not to let his behavior sour you if everything else was giving you a good vibe.
How odd! It sounds like you handled yourself very well. Maybe he was seeing if you could keep your cool in an uncomfortable situation? I would definitely be flustered.
Thanks for the support everyone! 3 other art positions opened up in the area. My professor advised me to take this job if they offer it to me but keep applying. There is no law in Michigan, it just burns a bridge with the district you leave. So that's good to know. I won't be disappointed if I don't get this job though, it was the first one that opened up and my first interview!
What the....? I had that happen to me at a job fair that I attended recently. I was talking to the representatives at a booth for a charter school and they saw on my brochure that I wanted to get certified to teach middle school language arts and one of the women asked: "Why the F*** would you want to teach middle school?" I was astonished to say the least. But best of luck to you! It will work out one way or another
Yes I am going to accept - it sounds like I won't have to deal with the super much and obviously I know how to handle him after 2 hours of him interviewing me!
What the? How in the world did he get to become superintendent? I would've found those 90 minutes to be totally insufferable. Glad you were able to keep your cool and got the job!
I guess the P decided that if you could handle that idiot super, then you could handle anything thrown your way by the students! Congratulations!!
Congrats!!! Just make sure you're never alone with that guy!!! He could be a diamond in the rough, or a pervert. Better safe than sorry!!!!!
Whoo hooo!! Loved reading your story! And it's true about supers, you rarely see them, it was 4 years before I met mine! lol! Congratulations!!!!!
Thanks everyone! I will have to meet with the super to sign the paperwork but at least I'm prepared now!
Great news - congrats! I agree, if you could handle the Super, you could handle anything a student will do
