    Contract hours 7:45-2:45
Students can arrive at 7:15 and go to the cafeteria for breakfast or to the gym for "holding." Dismiss to class at 7:45. End od day dismissal starts at 2:25. Teachers have morning/afternoon duty that rotates on a daily basis.
This includes 25 minute lunch, 20 minute recess, 50 minute specials, and once a week library and science lab.

Our contract hours are 7:30-3:30. We must be IN OUR ROOM ready for kids at 7:30, and school starts at 7:50. Dismissal is at 2:35. We have 30 minute duty-free lunch (really 20 after taking and picking up) and 15 minute recess. The kids have PE for 45 minutes (our planning period), but we also have to take our kids and bring back the grade that went before us, which takes 10 minutes usually. We are there for almost an hour after the kids are dismissed.

The only number that actually matters to me is how long each day I am "on stage." That means a room full of kids and a requirement to provide instruction to all of them.

What's interesting is that I seem to be the only person for whom the amount of minutes I'm required to be on campus and the amount of minutes I'm "on stage" are exactly the same. Even if I left during recess, nobody would miss me unless I didn't come back on time.

But here's the deal. Even though we can leave exactly when the kids leave, practically no one does. I might get out that early once or twice a year. But it takes a lot of effort to not need at least half an hour after school to take care of things and I don't just mean planning and grading either.

If my school came down and said all teachers must stay until 4:00, I don't think my life would change that radically since I'm there until for almost every day as it is. The same goes for if they said we had to be there every day at 7:30. That's my normal arrival time, but I usually aim for 7:00 if I can. Otherwise, my whole day is more hectic.

As I said, we don't get preps or specials. I wish we did. I am the only teacher they see for 5 hours a day, 180 days a year. If they were to lengthen our school day by 50 minutes and then give us a 50 minute prep I would be ecstatic. Not only would I have prep time - I could grade their spelling tests and give them back the same day - but I also wouldn't have to worry about infusing art, music, science, and/or PE into our scripted math and reading programs (which is what we've been told to do in order to teach those subjects).

    8:10 Kids can enter classroom
    8:20 Tardy Bell rings
    2:42 Dismissal

The lunch/recess combo was 40 minutes.

This is the schedule for our school days last year-- not sure what this year will look like.

Editted to add: We are expected to be at school 30 minutes before school starts and 30 minutes after it ends.

The children arrive at 8:40 and leave at 3:00. We have 25 minutes of recess and 45 minutes for lunch. I think I am supposed to be there from 8:10-3:30 but I could be wrong. I am always there longer so it doesn't matter.

    Students:
8:00 -- Extended morning kids had to be picked up
8:40 -- Rest of the class had to be picked up
    2:52 -- Dismissal

    Teachers:
    Sign in by 8:00
Able to sign out at 3:00

Each day included: one 45-minute prep (while kids are at PE, Media, dance, etc) and 50 duty-free minutes (while kids are at lunch/recess). On our designated "team planning" day of the week, we had 90 consecutive minutes of prep time and the 50-minute lunch break.

I assume the union had to fight hard for these perks.

Last year, we had to make up for more than two weeks of missed school thanks to Ike. So, in October, 30 minutes were added to each school day, and our day lasted from 7:50-3:30.

This year, our school day will run from 7:50-3:10.

Teachers can leave at 3:45. (Will we? I doubt it!)

The 4th grade planning (conference) period will be 11:20-12:10.

Fourth grade lunch/recess will be from 12:10-12:50.

Last year, our planning period was earlier in the morning, which made for nicely-spaced breaks throughout the day. This year's schedule will be nice, too.

Total teaching time = 340 minutes.

Having a job teaching? Priceless!
