I got called for an interview today. Great, right? Nope, I'm on vacation the day they're interviewing. I asked if another day would be possible and told them I was free all of next week and when I came back. Nope, they are only interviewing that one day. WTF? I called back and asked if a phone interview would be possible and they're supposed to be getting back to me.

I just don't understand how they can only have one day and if you're not available - too bad for you. I've had this vacation planned (and paid for) for almost 6 months now and I really don't think I should be expected to cancel it.

    I'm just really bummed.

Ugh - so frustrating! I wonder if it's hard for them to get an interview committee together? Hopefully a phone interview will suffice, but speaking from experience, an in-person interview is much better (at least it's easier for me!). I hope they're able to reschedule you!

I had an interview once where they gave me one time on one day. I explained I was in class, they said that they would only meet with me at that time. Luckily, I had a great teacher that wanted me to get the job. But, I was pretty surprised that they only gave me one time.

I'm sorry, that it is happening to you too.

Some schools are like that. It really stinks, but it happens.

Yeah I've had similar situations like that and it made me think that they have someone already in mind and are just going through the motions because they have to legally.

We are currently hiring for a teaching assistant position in my classroom. To be honest, for every job (especially in this economy) - there are MANY applicants. If we have someone cancel an interview, we allow them to schedule an interview for the following week (or whenever they want to re-schedule), but that if we hired someone in the meantime, we would let them know. I'm guessing that they're assuming that during their one day of interviewing they will find a great candidate and make the decision. It does stink that you had a vacation planned, but such is life! Someone else will call soon, no worries.

Just remember to watch your language. If you use that kind of language in casual settings, make sure it doesn't pop out in an interview. You would have zero chance of getting that job then.

So, they are going to do a phone interview with me! I'm very shocked because I didn't get the feeling they wanted to but I'm glad they are. Now I need to research phone interview tips cause I've never had one before.

That's great, Jlyn! With my phone interview last year I found it helpful to be sitting right by my computer with separate windows open to my resume, the school's website and some things that I wanted to say for questions that I thought I would be asked and questions to ask. Also, I had my portfolio right next to me so that I could open it up when I wanted to better explain something better in there. Good luck!

To be honest, they don't care whether or not you cancel. You're one of the people they want to speak to, but you know the job market around here. They have a whole stack of resumes, and if you can't or won't make the interview they simply go on to the next resume.

Call and ask whether there's any possiblility for a phone interview.

edited to add: Oops, sorry. Serves me right for only reading the first few posts.

That's great they're willing to do the phone interview.

I had a similar situation last summer. The ONLY day they would interview me was when I was on vacation in Vermont. I made the 6 hour drive back to PA for the interview and then 6 hours back up to Vermont the following day. It stunk, but it was the only option given so I did it. I'm glad to hear you don't have to do this. Good luck with the interview.
