So this first year of teaching has been amazing. Awesome students, great administration, supportive team, and I finally feel confident in what I'm doing (for the most part). My only worries before Friday was whether I wanted to switch to the hs level instead of my middle school position.

Well, my principal approached me at the end of the day Friday (strange, but I didn't think anything of it). He then proceeded to tell me that there is a strong chance I might not being able to stay at ______ Middle School because of the recession. He said he would fight for me if its only a 5-10% shortage in the budget but anything more than that, there will be nothing he can do to keep me on!!!! I am shocked, bummed, and so worried. It took me all summer to find this job and now I'm most likely facing a pink slip this spring.

Anyone else get the "talk" yet?

    I'm so sorry.

But what a wonderful principal. Regardless of how things turn out, how wonderful to know that he's willing to fight for your job-- that he thinks that highly of you!

I'll keep my fingers crossed for you!

Administration is the causes of most problems for teachers.

How do you think daycares and preschools play in this whole "recession" thing. Obviously if you work in a public school district you could get cut but what about privately owned daycares or Headstart places for that matter? Would people get cut from those as well?

:hugs: kstar. I hope that it doesn't come to that, but what a wonderful principal that would come to you, prepare you for what might come, and be willing to fit for your job.

Thanks everyone! Your thoughts and well-wishes are much appreciated! I'm not out of the woods yet, but my principal followed up with me again this past Friday and said things are looking better budget-wise and he might not have to cut teachers but instead get "creative" with spending. Which is great, but I won't feel good until I see my contract for next year.

It sounds as though your principal is on your side, sees your strengths and is going to fight to keep you. Hope all works out alright.

As parents lose jobs, they don't need to have a child in daycare.

Yeah! Just keep kicking $%^. You never know what might happen. He might lose other teachers and therefore be able to keep you even if the crunch comes true.

I'm rooting for you! I'm also happy you are having a great year.
