So, any other primary teachers have this kind of class this year?

10 days of school thus far. First grade. Many kids not yet six years old.

    Exactly five kids have cried:

One had fallen and bumped her head.
One's dad was late picking him up the third day of school.
One had her lunchbox taken (later recovered).
One had a legitimate tummy ache.
One was frustrated over not understanding a rather confusing assignment.

None have cried because they lost recess for misbehavior.
None have cried because they weren't first in line.
None have cried because I turned their card.
None have cried because I made them stay and finish their work.
None have cried because because I made them put their crayons away.
None have cried because I emailed their parents.
None have cried because I wouldn't let them sit by their friend.
None have cried because they didn't want to be at school and wanted to go home.

    So far so good.

Sounds like things are going well, Sarge! How many are in your class?

I have 14 third graders, but I am coming from a school where last year alone I had 32 second graders. I am loving the differentiation I can do with such small numbers.

As for tears... One girl cried the other day because her mom packed a fork instead of a spoon and she refused to eat her peaches with a fork.

Other than that, most crises have been averted! :)

You deserve it after last year, Sarge!

(We had one of our little Junior Kindergarten students cry yesterday when it was time to go home--they just come for an hour and a half on their first day and he didn't want to leave!)

Wow, you're off to a great start.

My year has started off great too.

I did have a little girl have a tummy ache, and I sent her to the nurse's office twice. The nurse called the mom and she came to pick her up. When the mom got there she decided she felt better and wanted to stay, mom made her go home with her but it was a huge scene. The little girl laid in the floor and threw a fit, mom took her anyhow. The next day she had a tummy ache again and mom wouldn't come and get her and she laid in the floor again crying because she wanted to go home. Oh such drama! I turned my back on her, let her cry, and she eventually returned to her seat.

mmswm took the words out of my mouth...This must be a nice change from last year's group..

My group is great this year! There is one kid who can't tell when he needs to go to the bathroom and ends up dirtying his pants, but as far as behavior issues, so far none! :)

Sounds like you are off to a good start.

    So far I have had
one cry every day at lunch (I think it is overwhelming to eat with 100 kindergarten students)
one cried because he didn't want to do the work.
One cried because he didn't get to join in a discussion
One cried because he didn't want to come in from recess
One cried because she wanted her mom
One cried because she didn't know what bus she was suppose to be on.
one cried because he got a time out for throwing a block across the room.

I am sure i had many more that have cried but I can't remember them all. Today was day five for us.

No criers for me--- I teach 3rd to 6th--- and I heard that 3rd graders can still have problems (last year 2 of my 5th graders cried). I heard one little one (either 1st or k) crying in the hallway after the class was being led in from morning drop off. :(

I swear, for some reason I've been so emotional lately, that if one of my younger ones cry, I'll probably break out in tears too. I'm not pregnant, but with so many changes, plus wedding planning and grad school, my body just hasn't adjusted yet.

Speaking of criers, I just saw a sign on the door of an elementary school in town that said "Quick goodbyes mean more dry eyes!" I thought it was a nice reminder for parents dropping of their children.

I'm glad to hear that you are off to a great start!! :)

Great start Sarge! This was day 23 for us and was the first day of crying. One of my little girls tripped on the carpet and hit her face on the edge of the table. She had a pretty big mark on her face. : (

We had our first day yesterday (today and Friday we have off). I had about 3-4 kids out for the first day. None of them cried, I was very relieved. One boy was hesitant to come in and had his hand over his eyes, so was crying a little I guess. He still came in, but I had him stand next to me for a couple minutes and then was fine. Nothing compared to what I had other years.

Awesome for you, Sarge! From what I gather from these other posts, you and I BOTH had quite a year last year!

This year I have had 2 criers, but both were done by the second day, and 1 child who can't aim in the bathroom, and comes out...well....moist. A little bit of chatter, but nothing major.

That doesn't count. Totally legit. Gravity incident, kid hurt. I'd actually be a bit freaked out if the kid didn't cry.

What I'm talking about are basically tantrums or kids not being able to deal with what should be expected of them developmentally. The funny thing is my class this year isn't real mature - lots of 5 year olds, many with very weak academic skills. But it appears that their parents have instilled in them some self-reliance and responsibility.

I like that. I'm going to ask our principal if we could have that on our marquee.

    My criers includes:
one crying teacher who should never have walked in with kindergartners on Day 1 - the very day she was taking her "baby" to college:eek:...
one crying student who had to finish writing 3 spelling words in cursive over the weekend:rolleyes:...
one crier who had to fill out a behavior form for her parents to sign:eek:...
Glad everyone is (mostly) off to a positive start!

No criers yet for me, although we only had one day so far, and of the 5 registered students (pathetically small class, considering the age range is 3-5), only three showed up. I'm crossing my fingers that it'll continue, but trying not to get my hopes up to high!

Sarge, sounds like you're off to an awesome start!

I came across very few criers the first week--just one adorable little junior kindergarten student who turned into a quivering "mess" when he couldn't get his lunchbag out of his backpack (which was almost as big as he was).

I had one crying the first day because the work was just too hard! She was obviously one I didn't have last year (or she'd be used to it and know better than to just give up). Her mom was upset when she dropped her off and they had to go to their seats and do a warm-up activity-not sure what she expected but maybe I know where the attitude is coming from. ;) I don't have much patience for the complaining/getting upset over nothing though. I've been known to talk about the kids their age working in diamond mines in Africa-now they have something legitimate to be upset about.

Glad you have a better group this year Sarge-I'm sure you'll take babies over the disrespect, etc. you had to deal with last year.
