Well after a long vacation from school I was all set to get back into the sadle again this am. But thanks to the Nasy Nor'Easter we are getting I got the call at 5:40 that school was cancelled for the day!! :wow: on one hand I am glad to have the day off and go out snomobiling but on the other hand I think I am over vacationed. I mean after christmaas break I was ready to get back intot he swing of hings and start the much needed work I have to do. Not to mention it adds another day on at the end of school. We have to make snowdays up.. This is our third one so far and it is barely January, if we are on this trend so far I can only magine what the rest of winter will be like!!!! How do your districts deal with snow, that is if you are in nowy states?

I'm out on a snow day too. The funny thing is, my immediate area didn't get much at all...maybe 2 inches, but it's been raining since about 6am.

It has ben rain, rain, rain here. WE already had 2 snow days, we can have three more before we have to make it up. I believe that our govenor gave the entire state 5 snow days (30 Hours) before they have to make up any snow days. I hope we get all 5 but no more. I hope to get one in Jan., one in Feb, and one in March. Let's see if it will happen!

It is such a mess outside right now. It's changed back to snow, but because of the rain earlier it's a slushy mess. Apparently the more northern and western parts of the state got hit pretty hard, but us here on the coast got mostly rain. What a mess!

I couldn't believe it when I got the phone call this morning telling me that school was cancelled. I looked outside and it was raining, there was some snow on the grass, but nothing on the street. The town where I work must've gotten a lot more snow. Also, I think the superintendent was being cautious because the last time the forcast said it was going to turn to rain it ended up turning back to snow right at dismissal time and half of the busses didn't get the kids home until 6:00 (about 3 hours late!).

He probably had some pissed off parents when kids didn't get home until that late.

Oh yeah, the parents were REALLY upset!! He made the right call that day, though. It turned to rain and rained for about four hours and then right at 2:00 it turned back to snow and it was total white-out conditions. He had no way of knowing that would happen. The weather was so bad that the busses couldn't drive and had to pull over. The busses pick up at the Intermediate school where I work and then go to the middle school to pick them up before bringing the kids home. I guess that day there were kids at the middle school until about 5:30 before the busses could bring them home.

I live on the southcoast (New Bedford/Fall River area) and teach in Lakeville (near Taunton). The Worcester area usually gets more snow than here.

But during hurricanes we spend 3 days before landfall prepping the home, buying supplies, a couple of days in darkness with hurricane shutters drawn, days to weeks of no electricity afterward. I don't think this compares to looking out the window at a pristine snowscape!!!

To prepare for a snowstorm, we usually just have to fight the crowds and stock up with groceries and other necessities.

Days to weeks of no electricity - That happens when there is ice that precedes the snowfall. The weight of the ice on the electrical lines causes them to break.

"Looking out the window at a pristine snowscape" That's a good one! After the snow finally stops, you have start the process of digging yourself out. Lucky you if you have a snowblower. If not, start shoveling with the snow scoop! Be careful - as the news man reminds you of how many people die every year of heart attacks when they over-exert themselves shoveling the snow. Just when you get the driveway dug out, that's when the city snowplow will come down your street and block you in with a pile of snow at the end of your driveway. So, more shoveling. Don't just clear the driveway - the sidewalks have to be cleared too - or the city will fine you for that. Then, if you have to park your car on the street, there is more digging out from the snow that fell and the snow that the snowplow mounded around your car. Don't forget to clear the snow off of your car top and windows, because if you don't, you could get a ticket! Snow is cold and cold often means frozen water pipes in the house. Somehow or other you better get those pipes unfrozen, or they will burst and then you'll really have a mess!

And - I am an Iowa farm girl. Snow on the farm means more work. Nothing lovely about what you have to do there!

Snow days - we love 'em!

laughing so hard now. Thanks Glenda. I love those stupid ice storms don' t you. When we used to live up on the hill we lost power every stupid snow storm. Usually just for the a day or two. Once we lost it for 16 days. That was horrible!
Now my mom lives closer to town so she doesn't lose it like she used to. We even lost in the summer time because of stupid thunderstorms. It was crazy!

My husband goes NUTS when the city snowplow guy closes shut our driveway after he just opened it up!
And now - there's a law that you can't throw any snow out onto the street. It all has to go back onto your own yard!

We had about three inches today. It was horrible driving. One bus went sideways, and most buses were over a half hour late getting to school.

Yuck! We don't really have much left on the ground because of the snow, but they're predicting more for this weekend.

We don't have any snow on the ground anymore. The weather man is predicting just some flurries in the next few days. Odd January weather!

Use either!!! No snow...all melted! We "may" get flurries, so you know what that means. We will either have lots of snow, or nothing!
