Anyone else off today? It's our second one of the year. We've got about 4", but it fell at exactly the right time. Almost all schools where I work and live (about 50 miles apart) are closed. It's supposed to be very cold tomorrow so I'm thinking we may have a two hour delay of even another day off. Teachers went back yesterday for training, but the kids sure are enjoying a nice long break!
We only got a dusting, and it came too early last night. I was hoping they'd be wrong and the heavier stuff would swing a little further south...
We haven't had a day off yet, only 1 2 hour delay. Yesterday was -20F with a wind chill of -45F and we were still on time.
That's one thing I miss about teaching in Ohio, snow days that you don't have to make up. In Illinois, they make up all snow days in the summer. It's surprising to me that some states do not make up snow days and some do. I couldn't believe how many snow days Ohio had last year that they didn't have to make up.
Yeah, Minnesota and Michigan know a few things about real winter weather. You guys get out and go when people here would simply to holed up till a thaw. I'm originally from MO, and I've had some bad weather, but it is nothing compared to what you guys get. I get cold just thinking about it. Stay warm!
No snow days for the online teacher. Only time I've lost days due to weather was when Hurricane Ike came through the Midwest and knocked our school's servers for a week.
We had nine last year. Ohio gave five "freebies" that are built into the schedule (some districts who didn't use all five would release early in the summer). Then we got three blizzard bags days where we have students an assignment to make up the day outside of school. So we just tacked one day on at the end of the year Now we're on hours, so we have to be in school x number of hours (I don't remember what it is though). Our school already has so many more hours that we could get 20 snow days before we risk making them up However, our two hour delays count against us, so that stinks.
No snow days here yet... weather man predicting Friday though!!! We'll see... Daisy snowy & 14 here!!!
We're on snow day #3. We had 2 consecutive days before Thanksgiving. Yesterday was an inservice day, so kids are getting an extended break. I'm enjoying it, since the holiday break was exhausting.
We got under an inch here, so no snow day. We have the same number of school days no matter what, so I'm happy to brave it out and get the extra days off when it's warm and sunny.
We weren't off today, but we are already called off for tomorrow - as is most of the northern half of my state. We just have too many kids who must wait outdoors for buses or who have a 45+ minute ride to school in -40 wind chill weather.
2 hour delay for me tomorrow...frigid temps with the snow covered roads from today, not a good mix for my rural district. I wouldn't be surprised if it closes.
Light beautiful small flaked snow pretty much most of day today. It was very cold, but not slippery outside and not much accumulation despite how long it snowed. Tomorrow night into Thursday is supposed to get very windy and colder but I'm not thinking we'll have a snow day this week.
I bet some schools will be closed here. It was snowing sideways! Lol. I bet we have picked up 2-3 inches since dinner time!
Many schools cancelled for tomorrow, from Minneapolis and into many cities in Wisconsin, due to 45 below zero windchills. I can hear the wind howling already.
Very, very cold here this morning. School will run as usual, although we will be more lenient with kids who arrive late because greater numbers of parents will drive their kids. Recesses will be indoors today; thankfully, they got out for a few minutes yesterday.
I'm in Charlotte, NC. We actually had about 5-6 snow days last year. But I was at one school 11 years and never once had a snow day. That snow last year was the first decent snow in 15 years. Consider yourself lucky!
Just got the call to close school today, however the district I live in is normal schedule, so I have to get my very sleepy kids up and out the door.
We had today off, due to windchills around -22 degrees. We have tomorrow off, too, and the low is about 5 degrees! Not that bad - I really don't understand why they're canceling. Friday is supposed to be even colder, so who knows, maybe we won't have school the rest of this week! I'm annoyed because we'll just have to make this up in June, and it's honestly not THAT bad outside.
You say not bad...but if your child was waiting for the bus & the bus got stuck or in a ditch....the kids could be outside for a dangerous amount of time. We live where it is cold like that...this is what they told us. I remember having college called off due to wind chills since you walk the campus!
I can understand school being cancelled for dangerous wind chills, especially for low income areas. I've worked at a lot of schools where kids did not have proper coats, hats, and gloves for winter. Some kids also don't have a responsible parent at home helping them get dressed to go out in the cold.
It takes a lot for us to get a snow day, and even then teachers are supposed to still go to school if they can. I don't think we'll get one any time soon - while it's cold, it's not THAT cold and we're not getting much snow this week.
I drove through the worst white out I've ever been in yesterday and it wasn't even snowing! Drifting was just that bad. Visibility was about two-four car lengths. We're off again today. I'm glad as at 8am it was -6 without wind chill. Our kids don't always dress appropriately and we have a lot who walk (including kindergarteners). Much safer just to call it. Everyone in our county is off.
We are hours. The elementary has more than state minimum, but high school is very close. Looks like we will be making up hours this year. Our students haven't been in school since Dec 19.
In high school my best friend lived on dirt roads, so know what you mean & her mom drove the bus for our school so she would call me hen her mom got the call!!! We were -6 air & -26 this morning...surprised a lot of schools had school....tomorrow I bet everyone will be closed if we get what the are predicting!!! Snow & cold starting in a few hours!!!
Every other school district in the area was given a delay or closing this week.....except for mine. Sucked big time trying to trench to work in that.
