Since my last name is Smiley, I thought a great idea for a classroom theme would be Smiley faces. I've been looking over the net (here, there and everywhere), and came up with a list of things I think I'll use in my class. I'll post them below to share, but I'm hoping other teachers have suggestions they could let me borrow?

    Thanks! Desiree

    *****

SMILEY CLASSROOM THEME: "Third Grade is Something to SMILE about!”

ON THE DOOR: “We're all smiles in Ms. Smiley's room.”.

BEHAVIOUR WALL: "Put your smile on!" and the rules listed below.

    and beside it...

CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT: For behaviour give every student a smiley face and have them move their smiley from level to level on a magnetic board. If you want to award classroom money for good behaviour, call them "SMILE SAVERS" and give them small coupons.
At the top put "We SMILE about GOOD behaviour!"
Use S.M.I.L.E. as a "SECRET CODE WORD" When you say "smile" they know it stands for
    Stop
    Making
    It
    Loud
    Everyone.

BIRTHDAY WALL: "Keep Smilin', cause it's ______'s birthday!" (should I have this in third grade?)

WELCOME BOARD: Welcome board with smileys for every student. "Havin' A Nice Day in Ms. Smiley's Class"

POSITIVE NOTES HOME: Call them "Happy Grams"

GOOD WORK BOARD: "Face it! This is GREAT work!"

CLASS REWARD: Make a giant smiley face and put a certain number of circles for the smile, fill them up, when they earn the whole smile, give the class some designated reward.

READING CORNER: "Reading makes your heart smile!" or "Reading will make you smile!" Get some smiley face material to make some floor pillows, or purchase some smiley pillows for the corner.

BULLETIN BOARD THEMES: "Get happy about (math, reading, etc.)",
    "______________ makes me smile",
"If you're happy and you know it, (read a book, write a story, etc.)"

STUDENT OF THE WEEK: Give the student a special smiley face pencil. "Smile Superstar" or "Someone to Smile About" or "SMILE! You're student of the Week!"

THE FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL: Have little smiley face containers on their desk with candy and give them a smiley face pencil and eraser.

GET-TO-KNOW-YOU ACTIVITY: Each student does a "top ten things that make me smile" list to put next to their smiley face.

My aunt collects smiley faces. She has about 1000 different things! They are all over the place- note pads, sticky notes, pencils, pencils, posters, etc.

You should have no problem decorating. Also if you keep the theme for awhile, you should build up a collection. She has people giving her things all the time.

I really like this theme. How could someone be unhappy in such a room? In my aunt's kitchen I am always happy- there are just so many smiles around! How could you help but be?

I think this is fantastic. Have a fun, fun year. And no, none of that is too young for third grade.

I used this theme in Year 3 last year. I called their homework files their SMILE files. Stands for:
    Students
    Managing
    Information and
    Learning
    Everything.

I like all your other ideas too.

I also made a matching jobs poster, with a smiley face for each job.

Good luck with this theme - I enjoyed it - I hope you do too.

I would love to see different smilie faces, especially humerous ones. You could change them out frequently to keep students paying attention and grinning.

Have you seen the smiley poster that says "what mood are you?" or something like that? It would also be good for kids. It gives them lots of words for their feelings.

Thanks everyone for liking my ideas, but I have to admit I took most of them from other teachers, I just compiled them in one place for my own use.

I'm going to have to use the "SMILE FILES" as my homework folders. Thanks!!

Does anyone have an idea of how to organize the class jobs around this theme? I'm planning on using Smiley faces (of course), but I don't know what to call the job chart. Maybe Happy Helpers?

I used a smiley theme in my room the past two years. My job chart was called "Happy Helpers". I bought the smiley face accents from Trend and put the kids' names on them.
