I am not a fan. I also don't like asymmetrical clothing at all. I actually tried on a dress the other day and loved the top and then stepped back and realized the bottom of the skirt was like this. UG. For the record, I hate trains on the back of the wedding dresses I have tried on, which is kind of the same concept but longer. lol
I inherited all of my grandmother's slips. I offer wear them under dresses and skirts. I like how the old fabric feels and I like feeling connected to her.
I like how they look! But it's a very particular look that doesn't suit everyone. For example, this woman should not be in public right now: http://24.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_m7j94oQT7J1rz3qkao1_500.jpg But this one works well: http://media.tumblr.com/tumblr_m7gq9fZqY81qdi9nv.jpg LOVE this one: http://25.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_m74nxvx5H71qcj0bco1_500.jpg Yet another good one: http://25.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_m725geJInf1ra91lbo1_500.jpg Hell to the no: http://24.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_m6i2ony9RS1r11p5zo1_500.jpg PERFECT: http://25.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_m6hzrcKu0X1qjjsg3o1_250.jpg This is coming from a guy who likes conservative clothing (i.e. more cloth than skin is showing, something half my generation doesn't understand), if my obsession with sweater vests and dress shirts hasn't hinted at that already .
I haven't worn a slip or nylons in YEARS! I've noticed that down here you can't even really find them to purchase in a store! There used to be a *huge* panty hose section at JCP and the other department stores. Now it's shoved in the back of the lingerie section, and it generally just has a handful of black or white hose or the occasional thigh high. Last year I went to buy a slip because I did have a shear-ish skirt, and I couldn't find one at Walmart, Target, Palais Royal or anywhere close. I was able to find one a JCP, but they only had a few and they were all way too long. I guess these are becoming things of the past. Side story: I had a teacher in 10th grade who was using the overhead screen. It was one of those old ones that would often get stuck and she had to keep pulling it out and trying to loosen it so it would roll up. Well, she gave it a particularly hard yank, it shot up and took the edge of her dress with her! She was trapped in front of the class with her dress over her head! We were dead silent (as she was one of our most loved teachers, so we wouldn't have dreamed of laughing at her), and then we heard her muffled voice say, "Please tell me I wore my slip today..." She had, and then we all (including her) burst out laughing.
I wear a slip and pantyhose to work any time I'm wearing a skirt. I just got back from mass; I wore a gauzy skirt, slip, and flip flops. Without the slip, the skirt would have been pretty transparent in sunlight.
Nylons? What are those? I kid! I haven't wore pantyhose in forever!!I'm not sure if the ones I own are still any good. This had me laughing so hard!! Poor woman! This!
It's very very unusual for anyone to wear pantyhose here. I don't think I've seen them on anyone under the age of 80. Tights are common in winter, but they're always black or colored. I almost wish we did wear 'hose because they'd make my legs look a heck of a lot nicer! It's much too warm though. If I'm wearing anything that shows leg, it's usually because it's too hot for pants. Slips are actually coming back into fashion, probably because sheer dresses and skirts are as well. A few years ago, it was absolutely impossible to find a full slip anywhere here. Now, the trendy stores carry them along with the department stores. I've purchased a few in the past couple of years.
Mike, I'm glad I'm not the only one who approves of these skirts I also agree with your choices above. Don't get me wrong, I actually only have one dress with a very little difference in the hemline and the skirt I just bought. I think with these skirts one must be careful, the skirt can look good, awesome, different or hideous, and that can be a difference of a cut or just a couple of inches.
For those of you that like the concealing effect of hose, but don't like to wear them ... Sally Hansen Air Brush Legs ...
I think slips and pantyhose are probably an age thing, maybe regional. I'm not sure. I don't know of anyone in my area that still wears those. In the summer, we regularly have temps that are 110+. But I think my mom still might wear slips.
I guess climate has a lot to do with nylons. It's super hot here today, but in the dead of winter my bare legs would freeze off. Not that nylons provide a lot of heat, but it's better than going without! FYI: I am WELL under 80... under 30 actually, and I regularly wear a slip and nylons.
Like I said, it's just how it is here in Southern California. I wouldn't presume to know the norm in other parts of the country. Colored/black tights are common in winter. I also mentioned that I do own and occasionally wear slips.
I wear pantyhose for a variety of reasons: concealing effect (I am almost glow-in-the-dark-white during the winter, not much better in the summer), feels more professional, and it holds me in a little better so there is less jiggle (sorry for any bad images that may bring). I am not horribly out of shape, but enough that I am a bit self-conscious, and hose helps with that. I have a slip for preventing static from making my skirts ride up, and also for a few sheerer skirts/dresses. But when I am wearing these, it tends to be a bit cooler, anyway, so I welcome an extra layer.
This nylons/hose discussion has come up a few times since I've been on these boards. It is certainly regional. Even the word "hose" is unheard of in some parts (like California). Slips, I don't know about those. I like wearing the ones like shorts because they keep my legs from rubbing together whistle:, sorry, I'm sure there is someONE on this board who would never need such a thing because her thighs do NOT touch). Other words that seem regional: soda/pop, couch/sofa, ...
Soda; pop is what you do to bubble wrap and coke is disgusting. Couch and sofa are the same thing. As for the skirts; give in ladies and show the legs. Covering up just the back is not good for the view from behind.
A carbonated beverage is coke, but you are of the opinion that Coke is disgusting. Capitalization creates a very important distinction here.
Yes, what kind of coke do you like? Dr.Pepper? I can't believe the strong opinions on the skirts! I kine of think they are cute. I haven't tried any on, but I am quite sure it is the shape of the skirt on my body, and not the actual fact that it is shorter in the front, that will determine if it works on me.
This is similar to the one my daughter has. The difference between the length in the front and back isn't as dramatic. I think it's very pretty! A-Line-Strapless-Knee-Length-Satin-Prom-Dress-Homecoming-Dress-3771-1 by bandnerdtx, on Flickr
bandnerdtx, that's one of the nicest ones of this new trend I've seen so far. It accentuates/flatters the legs more to me than a regular straight across hemline. I'd love that exact dress in royal blue & maybe yellow to be different. That would be lovely for a nice day/evening out. Hey, you got one! :thumb: I plan to too!
Yes, yes it does. But I'm pretty sure you know what I meant. And when out in public and asking for something verbally, that is irrelevant. Never lived in the east or midwest. Out west, we say soda. Coke is a type of soda, that I prefer give no respect to.
If I wear a skirt that is not tailored, I wear bike shorts since I had an unfortunate incident with a sudden wind gust that could have gotten interesting. It is better to be safe than sorry!
Bandnerdtx, I think the wrap around asymmetrical skirts look best. That one is so pretty! Yes, I wear leggings or my shorts-type slip under my dresses and skirts because I sometimes end up sitting on the floor or whatnot and want to remain respectable while getting up and down.
bandnerd~that dress is beautiful! I don't know if it's because it's a dress or because of the wrap-around, but that one I would definitely try on.
band, I really do like that...as I said earlier, for some reason dresses with this style are much more appealing than skirts. Very pretty.
I am the same age, and I always wear a slip. I even wear one made like shorts under demin skirts, and I know there is no see-through on those. I also only buy lined white slacks. No way I'm wearing unlined white pants.
I still wear slips under skirts-and I am not 80 years old! I also wear nylons (pantyhose) or tights if I am wearing a skirt in the winter, or in cooler weather. I am not sure that region has anything to do with it-I think it is simply the preference of the wearer. As far as high/low skirts, I am not a fan.
Me, too for most of those! A couple of years ago I noticed that it was getting hard to find slips in department stores (I even asked a saleslady and she said that there wasn't a demand for them but they were carrying spanx), but in the past year I've definitely seen them being sold in stores like Macy's, Dillard's, JC Penney's, etc. I think high/low skirts can look cute if there isn't a huge difference in the two lengths (i.e. the front is above knees and the back is to the ankles) but I try to to stay away from buying clothes that are very trendy--it's hard to know which will be there for one season only and which will last for a couple of years.
I live in south Texas and I do if my skirt or dress is unlined. I try to only buy lined, but sometimes that is hard to find. But I remember going to visit my grandmother and she would want us to stand in front of a lamp before we went to church to make sure she didn't see the light.
