    Hi everyone,

I have an interview tomorrow for a sixth grade language arts position in a really nice district. My problem is, I've only ever taught second grade and my other experience is mostly with the little ones. I do have a lot of experience tutoring middle schoolers, though and I am certified to teach language arts for grades 5-8.

In my past experience, I've been called for middle school teaching positions and the first question they ask is "If your experience is in elementary, why did you apply for this job?" and I feel like I always flounder on the answer. Although I prefer elementary, that job market is tough in NJ (unfortunately my maternity leave didn't turn permanent :() and I am open to teaching older kids. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can answer this question? And how can I translate my experience as working with younger children come across as satisfactory? I would really love to work in this district! Thank you so much in advance.

Maybe something along the lines of, since my experience is in elementary I have experience in teaching the foundations of reading and writing, however I have exposed myself to tutoring middle school students and can see the connection of where some middle schoolers may have difficulty and can come in handy while I differentiate my lessons.

    Or

While I enjoyed my time teaching the younger grades, I see myself in a position where I can go more in depth with the content of reading and writing. I also will be able to bring in an experienced view of helping struggling readers/writers since I spent some time teaching at the foundational level and can use my skill set to enhance their reading/writing.

I'm sure you can craft a better response but something to that effect.

Bunnie, these are great! Thank you so much. I like how you pointed out that I can help struggling readers since I've already taught the foundations. When I worked at a tutoring center that's why my boss wanted me to work with a lot of middle school students. :) Thank you again.

I got the job! It turned out to be 7th grade, haha. The woman on the phone gave me the wrong information. I'm slightly nervous because I've only worked with the little ones but I am excited to start in a few weeks.
