I am friends with several of the kids I taught when I was a student teacher. I was 20 years old when I student taught at a high school. There were Grade 12's who were already 18 by the time I hit 21 before Christmas. I student taught at a school in the area I grew up in (but didn't attend because I was in French Immersion). I was friends with many of my students older siblings and was even seeing one of my students older brothers his entire Grade 10 year (while I was a sub).

Now, since that time, I've moved, and taught in divisions outside of my home city, so I'm a little more free when I go home - mainly because I have no intention of teaching there. When two of my former students were 18 (underage in Saskatchewan) I bought them shots at a Cabaret (their parents were also there and the Cabaret was in a bar - I have no clue how they got in, but their parents told me it was okay and one parent was a CT of mine the other was a lawyer), but this is the first time I've had a former student ask me out.

That's right. Someone I taught for two years has asked me out.

I'm 6 years older than he is, but he wants to go out with me. We are friends on facebook, and he got my number and calls me nightly. We talk on facebook often (and have since I joined facebook), but I'm not sure what to do here.

He is in his 20s, and so am I. I have dated guys his age... but I never taught any of them.

So here is my situation, should I say yes? Or should I say no? I have no clue what to do!

Do you enjoy spending time with him? Is this a "going out with a friend" or an "I'm looking for a serious relationship" date? What is he looking for?

He isn't your student any more. He is in the same age range as you are. I say go for it!

Thanks. I think I will. He's nice, and seems honestly interested. I was just scared because I taught him 6 years ago!

6 years ago is a fairly long time, and your ages are similar. Why would anyone need to know that you once taught him? From what you say, your relationship with him has developed long outside of any teaching and has been on peer footing--that is the main thing that matters I think.

I know two different couples that were teacher/student at one point. They've both been married for something like 30 years or more. So, just don't introduce him as, "Hey, I used to teach this kid!" and I think you'll be fine :) If it isn't an issue to you, then it won't (or shouldn't be) an issue to anyone else.

The date is in a couple weeks. He still lives in my home city and I live a couple hours away and have no plans to go home for a couple of weeks.

Well, as long as both of you are long done w/ the school you both had in common, I guess it's alright. He seems to be your type physically by the way you said he looks. If you don't mind going out w/ younger guys, I guess try it & see how the date goes.

    Have fun!
