Mom called and said my sister and her husband were in a motorcycle accident. They were air lifted to Cincinnati (2 hour drive away). I called the hospital and they were in emergency. They could only tell me they were both alert and responsive, whatever that means exactly. Indiana does not have a helmet law for people over 18. Mom said my sister had head trauma, and her husband broke his pelvis. I hate being so far away and not knowing anything more than that. Pray for my mom, please, she lost her husband in February and losing one of her own children would be catastrophic.
As soon as I read the title, I thought... please don't let this be bad news. Alas it is. I'm so sorry. Your mom will be in my thoughts as well as your sister and her family.
I will be praying for your sister and husband. I am terribly sorry, and know this must be such a difficult time for you.
Thanks for all the wishes. Well, I heard back from my mom. She was not wearing her helmet. She has so many lacerations on her head they were still stapling three hours after they began. How many staples? Too many to count, according to the nurse. One laceration comes down onto her face, but all the rest are one the back and sides, under her hair. She's not out of the woods yet, but she is talking and held mom's hand really tightly while she was being worked on. Her ankle was abraded all the way to the bones. The joint is showing. they have not cleaned it up yet because they are still working on her head. There's something swollen behind her left eye they are wondering about but can't investigate until they get her head to stop bleeding and get all the skin back together. I'm confident and hopeful she's going to recover fully, with some scars obviously. I will feel more relief once they check inside her head for bleeding or whatever might have been damaged in the crash. Thanks for "listening." It's been a long night for everyone.
Oh Shelly, I'm glad you updated but that's heartbreaking. Good to hear that she is alert and talking.
I accidentally unsubscribed. There needs to be a "do you really want to do this" function for that feature. My fingers don't always hit the right target on my phone. Anyways... I've been thinking about you today. I'm glad you updated. I know it is a rough time for all but I'm thrilled it looks like she'll recover. That's definitely a blessing.
How terrifying. I'm so glad the news isn't as bad as you first feared. They'll remain in my prayers. I have no experience here, but it's entirely possible that there are "too many to count" because it's on her face and the work is being done by a plastic surgeon, with an eye towards minimizing scarring.
Thank you everyone, I am so grateful to have this place to get support. I just talked to mom, and she sent me two pictures. Gosh, her head looks like a poor old ragdoll. She is about to go into surgery for her ankle. She got on the phone for a minute and I got to tell her I love her. So grateful! Tomorrow the neurosurgeon will look at her head and she'll have to have surgery. She has one gash on her face, but no other ones that will leave visible scars. Some of the bones in her eye socket were fractured but they don't plan to repair that since here vision isn't impacted. I have to trust they know what they're doing. I am still on cloud nine that we're talking about her life after the accident (scars, vision) since that means she's really going to be ok. Her husband has already been released! He cracked his pelvis but again, they don't think it needs to be or can be helped to repair. Even a small crack in his skull, but there is not operation for that. He said he's not buying another Harley. My sister (this made me laugh) is still her same old self. She apparently got worked up that they were going to cut her Harley jeans off. "Don't cut that! I can take them off!!" she said. Later she told my mom, "I could have, too, if they gave me a chance to try." Goofy girl, in a neck brace and bleeding all over. But still her spunky self. I'm going to get her a pair of Harley jeans when we go visit in July. Thank you, everyone, you have really given me a gift by being able to come here and "talk."
Coming in a littel late... So scary to receive that call someone you know & love is in an accident. I can relate to how you must be feeling!!! Glad to hear she's & her hubby doing better. Prayers for all of you!!!
TeacherShelly, I am so glad you were able to speak to your sister. I know it was a long a scary night for you being so far away. I will contine to pray for your sister's speedy and full recovery.
So glad to hear they are both doing as well as one could hope after such a big accident. Continued positive thoughts for speedy recoveries.
Thank goodness she is okay! Is she still going to continue riding around on a motorcycle? Hopefully, with a helmet if so!
I will remain prayerful for a full recovery. I am so grateful to God that your sister is going to have such a better outcome than anticipated from the first post. Thanks for letting us know.
Great update from mom... Sister came out of surgery for her head with flying colors. MDs very pleased with the outcome. She may even leave the hospital in a few days! I'm so so happy
Oh, man, I talked on the phone to mom (not just text) and heard more. Sister had a hole in her forehead that did not break the skin. They repaired that and added a little fat from her belly to fill it out. Her eye socket was in fact broken and they pieced that back together. She'll spend the night in ICU. Still pleased with her outcome. It could have been so much worse. My mom loved finding out all of you were praying for her. Thank you for all the support!
I can only imagine how hard this has been on you, not being there. You all continue to be in my thoughts and prayers!
