My dog has been sick for almost two weeks now. We've made numerous trips to the vet (sometimes even twice in one day). He's had a fever for almost two weeks straight, went four days without eating, has been very lethargic and weak. We have been bribing him to eat with people food (rice and hamburger, toast, cheese). He's been on 2-3 different meds and had 2 shots. Last night we took him to a 24 hour emergency vet for extra testing because his blood tests have been showing low platelets.

Three hours, a chest xray, urinalysis, and more blood work later....he's been diagnosed with low platelets. We are running a tick titer to see if he has a tick-born disease (like Lymes, though he's already tested negative for that once). That test will take two weeks to get results. Other possibilities...cancer/tumor or bone marrow disease, or an auto immune disease causing him to destroy his own platelets. I'm hoping for a positive tick test, because that only means one month of meds. An auto-immune disease could mean medication for the rest of his life (he's only 2). I just want my happy-go-lucky, energetic dog back.

I'm so sorry. It is so hard to have a sick pup when they can't tell you what is wrong.

I am guessing they already checked for Parvo?

    Hope he gets better soon.

Oh, Scooter, I'm so sorry. I hope he gets better soon. There are few things sadder than a sick puppy or kitten. They look so sad, and they just can't tell us anything. :( :hugs:

Given that he's 2, if he's current on his shots it's unlikely that it's parvo.

I fed my 1st dog who had cancer baby food in an attempt to get her to eat.

Good luck! Other then a sick child, there's almost nothing worse then sad puppy dog eyes.

Our baby is showing some improvement. He actually ate his regular dog food today (first time in 2 weeks). He had only been eating people food or canned food (we did mix some dry food with it). He actually picked up a ball yesterday. Seems to be showing some more energy. He is due for a follow-up blood test sometime this week to check platelets. We're hoping the improvement means it is a tick disease.
Poor guy, he did have an accident Saturday night. The new meds make him VERY thirsty, and he peed on the floor overnight. Never felt him try to wake us up, and felt terrible! We are now setting an alarm in the middle of the night so he doesn't have to wake us. DH is taking him to work so he isn't home so long without a bathroom break.

    Update

Blood test today was promising. White cell counts are decreasing (a good thing), and his platelet count is almost back to normal!!! We don't need to take him in for another blood test for about two weeks. Looks like maybe we finally have him on the right medication! :)

    Update!

Finally got the results of the tick titer back at the end of the week. Our poor baby has Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever!!! It is treated the same as lymes disease, so we just need to continue with the medication he's already taking. We've also started cutting back on the prednisone, which is good, because it has a lot of side effects. He will have another blood test in about a week, but he should be better by the time he finishes the course of the medication (4 weeks total).

What a long haul this has been. I can't wait to have my happy, healthy dog back!

Glad they figured out what it was, and hope he feels better soon.

We actually had two different dogs get RMSF, at two different times, living at two different houses!

I am glad he is feeling better.. Our pup recently had a bad bad bad couple of days of what could only be described as projectile diarrhea.. I hope your pup continues to improve. :)

I am so glad to hear that he is feeling better and you finally have a diagnosis. I know the day that I woke up to a sick puppy was one of the worst days I can recall, I took him to the vet and was really not sure that I would ever see him alive again; luckily it was a bacterial infection and he was already improving enough to go home that afternoon. I really hope your puppy continues to improve and you have a lot more years ahead with him.
