    And if so, how often?

I have references on some of my online applications that are up to 4 years old. Do you think I should get more recent ones, and if so, can I use some of the same people I have used before?

    Thank you.

Update them, by all means. If the same people are willing to rewrite, great, or some may resubmit with a new date. You may have better references now, although I have found that people will say they will write you a reference, and then you have to be persistent if you ever want to see it.

Rule of thumb - no more than one year old is great, two years may be OK if a great reference, and their comments are on target for a specific job. Some schools won't look at references three years or older. IF you can get some references from educational related fields, they can be good to have.

I've seen some districts specifically mention on their applications that letters must be no more than a year old. Even if they don't say that, though, I think it's a good idea to have current ones. I used my old ones to upload until I had gotten the new ones, and noted that in my application that it would be updated as the new letters came in. However in my portfolio, I sometimes also include old letters, depending on the position, in my letters of rec section. It doesn't hurt to have them in there "unofficially" if they're really good ones.

As long as the author of the original is OK with that, all is well.
