I know this may seem like a crazy question for most, but since I am in a different profession (not education) but making the career change hopefully next year, should I have a portfolio to take to any interviews or to send to potential high schools? And if so, what should go in it since I am not teaching? I am sure I could dig up my portfolio that I did in college, but I am not sure how applicable it would be since that has been 10 years ago and I know most state standards have changed for bio/chem since that time. Any advice is greatly appreciated!

I think it would be helpful to have a portfolio. My portfolio includes lesson plans, teacher work sample, student teacher evaluations, letters of recommendations, copy of any certificates, copy of degrees... I think everyone sets them up differently. I hope this helps.

Thanks for the advice. I wasn't really sure what I should put in it other than just a little of everything from my current job and most everything that you included.

I would place anything in one that shows you can teach others regardless of age.

Some Biology stuff. (love that one) :)

And maybe a little personal. I had one and got a job on first interview.

While it may not always help to have one, it will never hurt.
