Should I be Upfront??- UPDATE GOT THE JOB!!!

Can a potential employer (school and/or district) find out what other schools you have worked for? Like can they look up your cetification number and find out how many years and what schools who've worked for?
    What do you think???

I GOT IT!!!! I got the call today. 3rd grade!!!!!!:woot::woot::thanks:

    >>>>>>UPDATE<<<<<<

So I went to the interview today. I took a copy of the "new" version of my resume....the lady was very happy with it. I'd sent the first one in back in April so me having an "updated" version was very understandable.

Anyway...she looks it over and starts asking about my different jobs. She saw that I'd worked for the school mentioned above for only a semester or so. I explained what happened. She was like "Oh okay...that's understandable."

Long story short everything went great, she loved me and said she would refer me to the next step. She said she would have the principal of one of the schools call me by Friday. Before I could even get home, a principal calls me for my second (follow-up) interview :D. So my next part is on Friday. WISH ME LUCK GUYS!!!

Be upfront. They will discover your previous employment because it does come up in your background check and it's tied to your certificate number. If you omit the info, this will be a reflection of your character.

Well I think it's not legal to ask for your SS # either- but at least in Illinois, you can look up a person with a last name and a SS #. I've worked at 3 schools. 2 are listed, one now closed is simply listed as CPS.

well go on your state board of ed's website and see what you can find out. I can look up my information as "an admin" with only my last name and social.

Go to your state certification website and look up your certificate.

MINE will list the public school I taught at, but not the Catholic one (probably because I didn't contribute to the state pension fund those years). That's not to say that they couldn't find out through OTHER means.

Bottom line...it doesn't pay to lie...if it's found out, you are in a worse jam.

I would add the omission to your resume immediately and take it with you on the interview. I would not mention that you updated it unless they ask. If they DO ask, I would say that you had originally sent an earlier resume and this one was the most current. If they ask why you left mid-year at the charter school, I would not say that you could not handle the situation and left. Why did you tell the charter school you were leaving? Maybe you could use the same story. I am not going to lie, this will not sit well with some interviewers. They don't want to be worried that you are going to jump ship if the year gets tough. I think that you should be honest though. Who knows... Maybe it won't come up. Who are your references? All my applications specifically asked for my teaching supervisor in my most current position.

You need to be honest about it but put a positive slant on it in whatever way possible. It wasn't a good fit for you but it was a valuable learning experience. Tell what you learned and how you will use it to become a better teacher. Do NOT emphasize the lack of support by admin or how rotten the kids were or anything else. Stay as positive as possible.

Thanks so much everybody!!! I will definitely let you all know how it turns out.

One more thing: Do you think I should talk about this as part of my experience when they ask that question, "Tell me about your experience." OR just have it on my resume, and avoid it unless asked about it specifically? I usually just talk about my sub experience.

Never bad mouth another school, however there are subtle ways that you can let another P know about a bad experience. I had a horrible experience last year as well.

Say things like, "After my first year of teaching, I am searching for an administration who supports teachers." Or "After this past year, I really learned how to work with other teachers and problem solve."

I was able to make it very clear to Ps that my previous principal was incompetent without saying a negative word about her.

Why couldn't you just give them your updated version at the interview? Then, talk about it as part of your experience during the interview. I'm sure others here can think of a way to make it sound positive as part of your experience repertoire.

ChiTurtle...Trust me I've learned that...and I feel so much better about telling it upfront!!

    Yes Zoe...

So the President calls me into her office and says "I was just looking at your resume and I see you don't have much experience." Then I took the chance to slowly tell her about my "situation". So I say..."well actually I have about half a year of exp. as a teacher." She says ohhh great, but I don't see it on your resume.

I then say "oh I just recently updated my resume, would you like a copy?' So I hand it to her, she looks it over, and then begins to ask me about that experience as a teacher. I basically told her that I was going through a lot of personal things at that time, so I decided I had to leave at the end of christmas break, but I couldn't stand to leave before then OR stay "in and out" (missing alot of days) after the Christmas break, because it wouldn't be fair to my dear students (this was my "positive" twist). I told her all the positive things I learned during that time. She said her apologies, and was like "yeahhhh that's life for ya huh?" We both kind of laughed.

She also asked about my subbing experience, classroom management, and discipline plan, we talked about my undergrad, and a few personal things about me (like hobbies, etc.)

Then that's when she told me she'd pass my info to a principal...and she literally did!!! So phase 2 is this Friday!! I'm soooo nervous. lol
