Should I ask?

I went into my new school to meet with someone (I don't know his title) about the staff development. My initials were on the board next to 5th grade. I'm pretty heartbroken right now- I don't want to teach 5th. ESPECIALLY inner city- I don't feel like my classroom management would be good enough. I never had problems in 5th before, but there were times I was borderline out of patience. I'm not sure I could handle it.

The other teacher that was there knew what grade she was teaching and there are initials on the board next to every grade level.

Should I call them and see if it can be switched? I'm seriously about to bust into tears.
I don't want to give them the impression that I can't do it, but I really, really don't want to teach 5th.

I would ask. There may be a teacher in a lower grade who would prefer 5th. Dont tell the principle what you typed here just ask if anyone would be willing to switch.

    Does this sound OK?

    Mrs. **,
    Good afternoon :)
When we spoke the other day, we never discussed grade level. When I came in to meet with Dr. ***today, I noticed my initials were next to a 5. Is this where you are planning on placing me? I was just wondering, because my personal preference is 1st, 2nd, or 3rd grade. I have my Z.A., and I am also Orton-Gillingham trained, so most of my educational experience is based on younger students. I'm very comfortable teaching 5th, since I have done it for five years, but I though I'd ask if it is possible to teach something a little bit younger.
    Thank you,
    Giraffe

I think it sounds good, and it's not unreasonable to ask. The worst they can do is say no and keep you in 5th.

I like how you reiterate your training and skill set with the younger grades, and also that you're fine with teaching 5th if need be (shows flexibility). I think the actual support for why you'd a great fit for 1-3 was a good way to state it...rather than simply saying "Can I go to a younger grade? I don't like 5th."

Try not to be too nervous! :) I get the same way though when it comes to things like this.

I think the letter sounds very good :) fingers crossed xx

I personally wouldn't say anything. I would just be happen with a job. You can always transfer to another position next school year.

You're lucky to have a job. If you don't want the job, I'm sure there are plenty of candidates who would take it in a heartbeat.

Hmm...given giraffe's summer of WORK she has put into researching and going after the perfect job, not to mention her proven track record of successful teaching, I don't think being "lucky" has much to do with it.

I've never bought into the idea of sucking it up and pretending to like what you have even if others would be genuinely happy with the same. It doesn't matter how others feel; it matters how you do. If I applied this "stop the whining" attitude to everything, I would then never hope, work, and reach for better things...because Lord knows I have much more than I need and millions upon millions of people would trade situations.

I'm glad you asked. I'm surprised grade level wasn't discussed alredy, though. Hopefully they'll be willing to make a change. :)

If that is all they can offer, then I will teach it. However, I can guarantee that I will be looking for a job again next year....

I am envisioning them sitting around saying "ok, who can go where? Here's giraffe, she's taught 5th grade before, let's put her there to begin with..." kind of deal. Especially when it is so new and the staff is brand new. I bet they read your email and grant it.

    She emailed back:
Yes, we were considering you for the 5th grade, because of your science background. I will talk to ** and we will look at a different grade level placement. Thank you for letting me know.

So hopefully it will be granted. I was their first hire and I was the only one offered a job on the spot. I'm guessing they want to keep me, so they will try to make me happy. Hopefully!

My response 5 minutes ago was:
Thank you. I figured it couldn't hurt to at least ask. I'm thankful to just have a job where I will feel like I can contribute!

    Her response back (already) was:
You are welcome. Welcome to ***, where we truly are a loving, supporting family! Delighted to have you in the family.

Nah, I don't think she feels that way...if she did, she wouldn't have worded her reply that way.

Well, we are on the edge, so I will forgive you. It is still light here, so we should probably be a different time zone.

Once I could not figure out why a flight from Flint to Detroit took an hour, but Flint to Chicago only took 10 minutes. Ummm- time zone

Glad to hear they're willing to consider changing you to a different grade that you feel you're a better fit for. Hoping they grant it to you. And if not, here's hoping to a great group of 5th graders :).

Any idea what class size will be like?

I asked about collaboration- which was my round about way of getting to class size.
They are advertising 25 students per class. However, I don't think the enrollment is anywhere near that. They are hiring 2 per grade level. I'm thinking it will be under 20.

The other thing that made me nervous about 5th was that there was only 1 pair of initials next to it- MINE!

Yeah, last think you want is 28-30 5th graders all to yourself and nobody to collaborate with!

Fingers crossed for 2nd grade with 15 students in the class :).

They also may not have found another teacher yet.

Either way, it sounds like the Principal will be responsive which is a great quality.
