I've never not taught in a classroom that I didn't believe I'd spend a few years in. As such, I've always made my classroom my own. My new position however is a year-long temporary position for a teacher who is on maternity leave and will be coming back the following year.

I'm torn between making the classroom my own and preserving things for her return. I don't think I could teach an entire year in the classroom as it is, and she didn't really bother to clean anything up leaving student work, personal photos, and personal effects everywhere. The kids I have this year will never meet her, and I'm unlikely to ever meet her.

What would you do in this situation?

If she were returning this year I'd keep it more "her room" but since it's yours for the year I don't see the harm in making it your room. Like you said, your current students won't have her so they'll never have to switch between the two of you. I wouldn't throw any of her stuff away, of course, not the personal stuff at least. But I wouldn't have a problem with throwing it all in a box and doing your own thing.

It's yours for the year--make it your own. Tuck away any of her things you aren't going to use, then go for it.

Make it your own. Take care in putting away her belongings in an organized fashion.

It's your room for the year. Make it work for you.

Box up her stuff and make the room yours. A year is a long time.

I agree with Linguist. One year has turned into two for a teacher at my school...

This is your room for the year. She really should have made arrangements to pack away her own stuff. I would ask admin if she can be contacted and asked to send someone in to take care of her personal belongings or else, just have the custodians box it up and label it for storage. this should NOT be your job.
