I think I have my room plan fully organized on paper( we all know exactly how much that means):p I still haven't seen the inside of the building let alone my room, but somehow what I create at home seems okay but something is missing. I looked back at the pictures I took of my boards from other years and the ideas were cute but I felt that they weren't quite perfect. I don't want to spend the first day of school thinking if I'd only had more time. I love my boards as planed, thanks to everyone's suggestions. What is the missing piece? (thanks to the late and great Shel Silverstien)

can you have too much space?

Well, I will be teaching 2nd grade this year coming from Kindergarten and I thought that I would probably have a smaller classroom. Well, I went to see my classroom and it turns out it is huge! It is one of those classrooms that is normally divided in half by those big canvas ceiling to floor roll-away walls. They stopped using it as two classes a few years ago and the teacher I am replacing was in that room. So now I have one huge classroom all to myself. The average class size at this school is supposed to be 18-20. That is also an improvement over my last school. So I have a bigger room with less kids and also desks instead of tables.

Anyway, so much for my classroom plan! I guess I need to come up with a better one in order to take advantage of all the extra space. It will make having centers easier I guess. I guess it's better to have a bigger room but I can't shake this feeling that it is too much.

Anyway, the point is that I understand about the room plan jitters. I've got 'em.

Today is my LAST day of summer vacation.

    :(

Oh wow Nick! To have a class that size. I am in a cramped classroom once you get the 3 tables, 4 kid desk, toybox on wheels, 9 kids and 2 of them in wheelchairs. My room is attached to the next room with a hall to a shared bathroom. I am waiting for the teacher over there to retire so I can hopefully sweet-talk someone into letting me have that room, too. The teacher that is in there isn't really a part of our school but the school across the parking lot. They ran out of room over there. Anyway. I would love to have that room to put my big stuff in for a big play area then one classroom for sit down activities. The room for the big stuff could be used by the physical and occupational therapists, too. It could hold all of our BIG stuff that is currently being stored in an unused hallway. I have the idea all worked out... now ever seeing my idea come to life... who knows. Oh, to dream.

    So, guess what happened?!

I went to school today for orientation and I met some of the new teachers to the school. Well, one of them is a special ed teacher for 4-5th grades. Well, we began talking about our classrooms and she mentions that her class is tiny because it is really one class with a canvas divider splitting it in two.

That's my classroom. It's the only one in the building. So it turns out that they are splitting my class in two. AND I get to have a room full of 4th and 5th graders on the other side of the canvas!

I went from having the biggest room in the school to having the smallest classroom in the school(one of two anyway). Right now there are 19 desks(not enough) and my teacher desk and a kidney table and the room is packed. Both storage closets are on her side of the room AND my bulletin board! So much for my plans on that. I have no idea how to have centers, or a class library, or a word wall, or storage.

This has really upset me. I guess I just needed to vent.

    SIGH.

    Nick,
Nothing like notice is there? Are you setting up storage plans with the teacher next door? I hope you at least have a window in that space. I swear that's why Rubbermaid stock goes up each fall. I wonder when the parents will complain about the canvas wall. Hang in there !

    The squeaky wheel.....

    So, guess what happened?!

Today after the incredibly boring orientation meeting I went back to my school because I figured I'd better get to work on my tiny little room....

Well, I decided to go and ask the Asst. Principal what the deal was with giving me a tiny room like that when every other teacher in the school has a room twice that size. She told me she would have to think about some more options and get back with me.

So I said okay and resigned myself to getting used to my broom closet. Anyway, about 20 minutes later I hear "Nick, Nick, stop what you're doing!" in the hallway. Well, here comes the AP and the Counselor coming down the hall and they tell me the good news.

It turns out that there is a Special Education teacher that has a great big room but only has like 5 kids. And since the other half of my room is going to be used for Special Ed anyway they figured they may as well let the two classes be next to each other! They also decided it is not fair to have a class of 20 in a room that small.

So they escort me to my NEW and IMPROVED room and it's great! It has boys' and girls' bathrooms in it and a loft! They told me that the other teacher was planning on tearing the loft down but they could keep it if I want. I said sure.

So...I ended up with an even better room than I started with! Of course there are drawbacks...The rest of my 2nd grade team is downstairs and I am right above them upstairs. Also, I may have made an enemy of the teacher that is being called this afternoon and told that she has been relocated. Sigh.

I just hope and pray that she accepts the move and doesn't cause enough trouble for them to change their minds about it!

Well, I guess I've talked enough!

Can't please everyone Nick... but at least you are now :) And look! you get a LOFT... a great place for a reading loft. I knew a teacher who had a reading loft. I thought that was SO neat!

Well, I'm glad things worked out for you!

    Yea Nick!!!!
Just be sure that you rig up an elevator through the floor to connect with the other 2nd grade teachers(ha, ha) I know a bad joke. It must be too much daytime TV.

Hey! Well the princiPAL stopped by and said that all the lofts in the school have to be taken down! He said it's a liability issue! I understand you have to be careful but I didn't think it was going to be that serious of a problem. Anyway, there are lots of disappointed teachers in the school. I think my school has like 8 classes with lofts! Anyway, he told me that he'd get it taken down "sometime this year" but not to let the kids on it.

So...I'll be taking my electric drill to school on Monday.

Anyway, at least I still have an awesome room!

Well, I hope you get it down soon that way you won't have to keep telling them... STAY OFF.
