I def want to relocate. I will go almost anywhere. I have posted a thread like this awhile back when I first started but seriously...for us that want and can relocate...where are the jobs.
Are there that many early childhood/elementary majors that there are no DECENT jobs?

I know there was a thread about jobs in Texas. Anywhere else? This is crazy.

I have heard Gwinnett County in Atlanta is hiring, but I don't know for sure. They are a big district (I believe in the top 20 in the nation), so it would make sense that they would hire.

Where would you like to move to?

There are a few elementary jobs in the Central Valley in California. (There are more middle and high school jobs.) Go to www.edjoin.org and search for elementary positions in Fresno County. Although that's the only county that has any elementary positions out of all of the surrounding counties. There were a ton of elementary positions in Tulare County, but those ads closed already. I guess it's just tough all over. :(

I heard New Orleans was hiring. (saw this on Teachers-Teachers.com). Not sure exactly how many openings they have though.

I don't think you're going to find a lot of "states" that are hiring. I think you'll find small pockets of growth.

Maybe you should approach this differently. Hit Google and find communities where construction is up. It seems to me that those would be the places hiring teachers.

For example, I just hit google and found Newsweek's top 1300 US high schools for 2008. In your shoes, I would apply to each and every one of those communites, and mention the article. Good high schools are the result of good feeder schools, and I bet the parents there have a solid investment in keeping those schools good.

Atlanta is pretty well saturated unfortunately. Gwinnette Co did do a job fair, but over 500 people showed up and most all of the jobs are middle or HS. I know Clayton Co is hiring, but that is due to the fact that most teachers jumped ship when the school system lost accreditation.

Nebraska. Especially rural areas. I've posted about this before, I don't think anyone took me seriously! It's the good life, I'm telling you.

Salaries cause a bit of sticker shock here, and they are low, but the unicam is doing what they can to bring them up, and the COL is so low, it's really not that bad. I'm comfortable, and would be even without my dh's salary.

there are places in RURAL Montana that are hiring but these places are seriously 2-3+ hours away from a major city so you need to be prepared for a different kind of lifestyle.

Major...I saw a camo bikini in Cabela's the other day. It was cool! I was going to buy it, but it was over my $20-for-swimwear rule...

    And we don't have just 1 Cabela's...we have 3!

    Ms.Bee-

I'm looking to relocate as well. I have been looking at several districts in different states, and I am currently applying to Prince William County Schools in Northern Virginia. They seem to have a lot of openings.

Don't get too excited about Prince William. I called and they said all of those jobs they are mandated to put up. Those are all of the jobs for the transfer people. They just can't list that they are only for transfer people.
They won't be hiring until end of June/July I think they said for new hires.
I was happy when I saw that too.

I grew up in VA and taught there until a few years ago when DH's job moved us. I lived a little south of Prince William. There are not a lot of openings posted right now but they were always very happy to hire out of state grads. My best teaching friends were always from NY and PA where it was hard to get jobs. Check out Spotsylvania, Stafford, and Fredericksburg. There are also really good school districts around Richmond.

    Good luck!

Don't give up hope yet, MsBee!!!! It still really is early. I know we'd all like to know we have jobs in May or June or even July, but there are those that get hired right before school starts and sometimes after. I know I've had interviews in late July/late Aug. I've even been asked to interview a week after school started.

Your right!!! Your right!!! Its just so frustrating. But your right...don't give up..its still early.

Why did I think when you graduate things just fall in your lap?
Or was it like that before this year? How were things before? Was it easier to get a job?

I was all stressed about being destaffed...but it turns out my school has to hire a few teachers. (most of the jobs cut were custodial/ secretary positions)
I teach in Fairfax Co, Va. Right now they are just doing transfers but they will start hiring in June.

For most of the country in most areas of education, it was never like that. In most parts of the country, elementary education has had a glut of teachers since before the Vietnam war offered deferments for teaching.

Nothing worth having ever falls into your lap.

MsBee-even before this economic crisis started, nothing fell in my lap after graduation. There are a select view in which that might have happened, but for the majority of graduates, they bust their tails to get a job: job fairs, relocation, emailing, snail mail, visiting schools.

I guess what I'm trying to say is throughout my whole college career they talked about the need for teachers, getting a job before you graduate...etc...you all know that story..so now its reality.
    Its not really like that.

I applied to Fairfax county. Any tips or anything you can give me about this district and the jobs etc..or whatever.

Also do you know if you need to be certified in VA before you start teaching or do they have something provisional?
I am certified in my state but not in others. (I just did a thread about this)

It was in their own self interest to say so. It kept students in their classes.

    Ms. Bee,

It is a little piece of advice, run as far as you can away from Clark County School District in Las Vegas.

It is not worth it to move out here and work for this district. Find something closer to your home. Trust me. I know. I am moving back to my home state in Aug.

    Thanks

Unfortunately in education, especially elementary education, it is not what you know but who you know. My daughter graduates in elementary next spring and she has a job already for the following fall. She has a job due to connections. She works at the school already and the teacher is retiring at the end of next school year. It is a private school so I do not know that this could be done in a public school.

This is my 2nd year in Fairfax....I got my job without being certified in VA (I was certified in PA and MD.) I believe as long as it's not a Title 1 school you shouldn't have a problem. I realized after I applied that I would have to email principals in order to get interviews. (HR doesn't really call for interviews...make contact w/ the principals!) It was really late in the year when I applied (July) because I was looking at other counties first. They were already done with transfers by the time I applied.

I don't think they have individual school vacancies up yet (due to having to hire destaffs first) but if I were you I would look up the elementary schools you're interested in and email the principal your cover letter and resume. They may even interview you early.
(I believe my school is hiring 1 destaff and 2 new teachers)
