EXACTLY! I made a post about this and everyone thought maybe I was being filthy! I left dishes soaking for a week and never had an issue with MAGGOTS! Like WTF. I am LEAVING SOON AS I GET MY CHECK. Paying the rent for september and getting TF up out of there!! I literally left with a few clothes that were not around the bed area! I told my family that I will bunk with them until I find somewhere and will be leving everything inside the apartment. Including pots pans and clothing!

I had a guy friend that would frequent my BOTH of my apartments. My OLD place and the NEW one. At first, I thought it was him but as much as spent the night at my old place and the new place I never had an issue with bugs until now. He came to my place 3 weeks or 4 weeks ago but this time he did not sleep on the bed. He slept in the other room on the floor! If he brought them in then it would have also been in the other room where he slept. These bed bugs are on the floor bed and underneath the carpet. Perhaps there was an infestation before I moved in.

So the landlord's theory about it being me is not true.

You guys I am so traumatized by this experience that I don't think I can live in close proximity with anyone else. Also, I am staying clear of places with pets.

Pets? Bed bugs and maggots aren’t issues brought on by pets.

Okay so I'm going to put in my two cents worth here, you may take it or leave it as you please.

    1) Bedbugs are not always caused by pets, neither are fleas (shockingly enough). In fact, it's almost just as common to find fleas in areas without pets as it is with pets. Bed bugs are not exactly like fleas, in that they aren't able to jump or fly. Bed bugs aren't exactly nimble things. I've had dogs all my life and I've never had a bedbug infestation nor a flea problem.
    2) Bedbugs generally do not travel via person to person contact, jumping from host to host. In fact, they usually prefer to catch a ride on luggage and just wait to a stopping point to unload, if that's possible. Bedbugs are limited to crawling across surfaces in order to get where they're headed. It's even possible - and in your situation likely - to move from apartment to apartment via the walls, electrical outlets, etc. To determine how they arrived to your apartment, have you traveled recently? If so, your luggage could have been the carrier. Areas of large public traffic are often where people pick up their unwanted house guests. Places like this include airports, hotels, offices, and conference rooms.
    3) Once an infestation has taken roots, it has to be completely wiped out in order to prevent it from spreading again. You might get rid of them in your bedroom, but they're in the carpet as well. Powder form is usually the recommended way to treat, then vacuuming it up.
    4) Most of the time, bedbugs prefer to nest within 4.5m (15ft) of their food source, aka you when you sleep. Meaning in your mattress/frame, or just underneath in the carpet.
    5) Elevate your bed. Get some bedbug traps which fit on the feet of your mattress frame which raises your bed a bit. The bugs will climb on the sides of the traps, then fall in the cavity in the middle. There's usually a coating of talcum on the inside of the walls of the cavity which prevents the bedbugs from continuing their climb.
    6) Get some bedbug covers for your mattress and pillows. This covers prevent bedbugs from being able to get inside or leave your mattress.
    7) Wash your clothes with the highest temperature setting you can.
    8) This one is important: the cleanliness of one's living conditions do not effect your chances of a bedbug infestation.

So no, people living in filth does NOT cause bedbugs.

    Hope that helps!

Also, you really don't have much room to be judgmental about "them people living in filth" when you left dishes in the sink with food in them for a week...

I appreciate this so much! Thanks a lot and great points. However. I am leaving that place. I never traveled anywhere so this has to be something coming through the walls or next door. Perhaps in my next place, I will purchase these things and place them around the house before I officially move in

Also, you said I made good points, you did read #8, right? Just want to make sure because I'm still hung up on the "them people living in filth" comment.

OP, have you taken a trip or two to your parents since moving to your current apartment? If so, did you take luggage with you when you went to their house? If so, you might be the kind of carrier that bed bugs like. For whatever reason, they like to travel in luggage - guess their short legs make walking from place to place difficult, so why walk when some nice person will simply carry them in their luggage? That's how all of the fancy hotels ended up with bed bugs, to their chagrin. Obviously people who can pay high fees for a night in their hotel "should" be clean enough to stay in the elite hotel, right? Wrong! These people travel extensively, upping the risk of exposure.

If you have gone to the parents, or planning to camp out with the parents, you should, in all honesty, tell them about the infestation so that precautions can be taken (think bed bug proof covers on the mattress and box springs, at the very least. You obviously don't want to be around pets, but dogs don't carry either flies or bed bugs. If you have fleas, well, in the south, you can't even be 100% sure that the pets are responsible for them, but your chances are better of winning that argument.

If the roles were reversed, would you welcome your parents to "bunk with you" if they told you that they had bed bugs??? Don't expect to be welcomed with open arms. I'm not saying they don't love you, but they may not be so fond of your new found friends.

Aces hit all of the most important things you should know about these critters. I am sure you are currently humiliated, but her #8 is very important to take in. I'm guessing you've had "room-mates" since you moved in, but NOT because of people's pets. Rather, they came with the carpet or baseboard, your furniture, or they hitched a ride in someone's luggage. A few multiply, and soon you are noticing them more and more frequently.

If you want to leave, so be it. But let's get one thing straight. Flies laid eggs on your dirty dishes, which became the maggots within 3 days - perfect timing. You had a hole in your wall, giving flies access. You live in the south and it is summer. I kind of think that there should be no surprises there. You could have closed the hole in the wall, but didn't until the problem presented itself The flies are not related to the bed bug situation, and neither, in reality, is related to pets, since I am certain that you didn't' take your dirty dishes and leave them in the pet exercise area.

I hope you are welcomed home, but be prepared for the answer to be "No", considering the situation. After all, if their home is very close to the pre-school, you can understand that this may present a problem they aren't willing to work with.

I do wish you the best of luck, and feel compelled to also remind you that unlike the other situation, these particular critters do NOT reflect on how clean a person is. Try to remember that - they are scary and you can ask "why me" and "how" until the cows come home, without coming to a concrete answer. You didn't DO this, but now you simply have to deal with the fall out and go forward from here.

I'm a he, darling. Don't worry, I'm not offended, just making you aware ;) Carry on!

Let me raise another issue...you are abandoning your lease as well as all your belongings? Be prepared to deal with the legal issues you will now be facing.

I'd like to offer some heartfelt advice...you are an adult...time to put on your big girl panties and deal with issues as they arise...not just running away from issues because they upset you. Bedbugs can be alleviated successfully, as can flies. It's time to face the issues and get them fixed. You can't continue to run back to mommy and daddy every time something happens that you don't like.

    Good luck.

I would also like to add that I have been to that place for only 2 months and under my lease, I am still able to LEAVE. I am not running away from an issue. bedbugs are hard to get rid of! The apartment complex hasn't contacted me yet about meeting with the exterminator. This unprofessional on their part. Also, the neighbors need to know of this issue and they have failed to tell them. My tolerance level for this mess is SHORT. I am not sure where you all were raised or some of the living conditions that you all live or has lived in but I am not use to this. It is outright nasty and makes my skin crawl. So yes I will be LEAVING. Forget that lease. I only have to pay September's rent and be well on my way.

I understand that I come here often with issues but I am not immature. I know my rights and read my lease well. I even got confirmation from the landlord

I don't understand abandoning all of your things when so much of it will not be affected. I also don't understand abandoning clothing when it can be cleaned properly to remove bedbugs and their eggs.

Just because you are upset doesn't mean you should loose all sense of reasoning.

There are right ways and wrong ways to go about this problem. You are going the wrong way about it. Go through the right channels to break your lease, if it can be broken. If the professional won't give you something written showing how long he believes the infestation has been in the apartment, find out of another one will. If they say longer than you lived there you have proof that the landlord bears responsibility.

Sure hope you bagged and tied up those clothes and kept them outside at your parents house before you washed each bag one by one.

So your lease is month-to-month? Most people do year long leases because they are cheaper. If it is month-to-month you aren't really breaking a lease. Maybe that is why we are all confused by what you are telling us. You initially said you won't renew your lease, but didn't specify it is month to month.

As others have said, there may be legal ramifications of you leaving your stuff there for the landlord to deal with when you leave.

NOPE! Pots were soaking with bleach and water. At first, I thought that maybe it was me but I am starting to think that this was not my issue. As much as I left pots soaking for 3 days I never returned with flies and maggots around them. Even if I left dishes in the sink for a day or 2 maggots never took over them. Never had that issue in my life. That place wasn't cleaned well

...you are aware of the definition of the phrase "running away from problems," correct? I'm just making sure because I never like to assume things about how much other people know and realize. That being said, you realize you've contradicted yourself, right? You're not running away from your problems, yet you're leaving...

And have you actually read anything I've posted? Or others, for that matter? It's been pointed out multiple times that bed bugs have nothing to do with the cleanliness of one's living conditions. To continue to assume otherwise, and to continuously judge your neighbors based on that false information – because I'm sure you've not actually bothered to get to know them – is incredibly ignorant and immature of you. It also has nothing to do with how you were raised. It just simply doesn't.

Regardless of of you leave or not, grow up and act your age – which means forgoing your outright ignorance.

I honestly do not care HOW YOU feel. You do not have to live WITH IT. Leaving a problem THAT IS NOT MY ISSUE. Is something I WILL NOT DEAL WITH. KNOW the DIFFERENCE. I am not sure where it came from but it certainly wasn't me as I have not went anywhere since I moved in. Maybe the infestation traveled to my unit. Who knows! But I am not living there.
