Will your school librarian have some ideas? Usually when it's a topic your school feels you should cover, then your librarian may have already purchased some books to help cover the topic.

I just read The Man Who Walked Between the Towers and the boy scouts do a flag cermony. I might do something for my dad's fire department, like writing letters, etc. Not sure, but usually I just read the story.

There is a book called Fireboat about a retired fireboat that was called into duty that day...you could check that out.

There is also a book about September 12th. I can't remember the exact title, but it is written by a first grade class and it talks about waking up on Sept. 12th and knowing that everything would be alright.

I had a hard time teaching 911 last year. My kids were born in 2000, so they didn't remember it at all. Also, it was the beginning of the year and their first social studies writing assignment was based on an article we read in Scholastic News.

Some kids had very little to say like "maybe people missed the buildings so they wanted to put new ones up." or "people were sad when the buildings came down." The writing was of poor quality, as was the thinking. I think it was just so soon after school started, and they were so far away from the event (by location and their age.)

How do people deal with this? It made me not really want to teach it.

Thank you for all of your help! I will wait and see what the school and my team decide to do. I just like to be prepared. = )

I didn't do much with it last year, I was in Kinder, or the year before when I taught second. I just told my kids that something very sad happened on that day, and if they saw alot of American flags that people were flying them to remember all of the people who were killed. They seemed ok with it. It just seemed like too much to explain to kids with such a sense of things that happened in the past.

Silently off topic...but has anyone read Iraq 2003? While searching for September 12, I stumbled onto it and wondered if it might be controversial. Just curious...I am interested in the book, but I certainly don't want to cross any lines.
