I'm a university student from Australia. For an assignment I am reviewing a journal article about special education. The topic that I have chosen is Selective or Elective Mutism. I was wondering if anybody here has worked with a child who is electively mute? I am interested in finding out more about this topic, I would greatly appreciate any input. Thanks.

I had a child in my room who experienced selevtive mutism. I had him for 2 years (age 3 and 4). The first year was much worse than the second. I am by no means an expert on the condition, but I will answer any questions I can. Feel free to e-mail me at prekmontessori@aol.com, or continue to post here.

    Book on Selective Mutism

There is an excellent new book on this topic. I have it listed on this page of my website
    www.gate.net/~labooks/SI.html

It is by a reading specialist who helped a child who had been selective mute for 5 years. It has lesson plans and many excellent resouces.

My site has many other helpful resources for regular and special education: new Dolch sight word books; books for anger and stress management; children's books about disabilities; etc.

I taught a preK child who had selective mutism. That was 2 years ago, and I found out that she still suffers from it, though not as greatly as before. What kinds of things would you like to know? I'd be happy to help you in any way. Either post the questions here or you can email me at smgd104@aol.com

Thanks for responding so far. I guess what I am looking for are places to find information about how to work with these children in the classroom setting. I'm also looking for support groups etc that I would be able to refer parents to etc. Internet sites, books, community groups, basically anything that will help me understand how I can work with the children and their families.

Hi, I'm a preschool teacher. I have a selective mute currently in attendance. She is 4 years old now and has been attending our school beginning when she was 18 months old. Very interesting case study. I have had experience with 2 other selective mute children in my past, and info on a third. I'm interested in sharing information. We have made some progress with this child, but we have a long way to go. Email me at darleneparker@mvdsl.com. I may not check this site again so I would prefer our exchange through my email address.
