I've been working as a substitute for many years in Ohio. I enjoy it -- but feel overqualified. I was a middle school teacher in Florida but was laid off years ago. I have a bachelors' degree. I've looked into the Alternative Education route, but it seems like a waste of time. I know highly qualified teachers with Masters' degrees and 10 years experience still not finding jobs.♂️ Anyone have any ideas on how to find a full time position w/o a Masters? Im an older teacher.
Depending on what your degree is in/desired teaching area, you may be fine on a sub license. I'm still not fully licensed in OH (avoiding the RESA mess) but have taught for three years as a teacher-of-record on an unlimited sub license after my out-of-state permission expired. I'm fully licensed elsewhere. I'm not the only one at my school teaching under the same provision. The big "but" in this is that 1. I'm properly licensed elsewhere, and 2. my degree allows me to qualify to teach an unlimited number of days in any one classroom. My education degree lets me teach any subject, but a more specific degree may only allow a narrow range of allowable courses or ages. My OoS license is K-12, so I can do whichever classes legally.
I’ve been retired since 2021, and for quite a few years before that we were having trouble finding teachers. We had several subs in full-time positions, and we also had people working on MAT degrees while teaching. I’m in Kentucky.
Also, you need to be flexible in terms of location. If you're only looking in the district closest to you it could be just that they don't have any openings right now. If you broaden your search you might have more luck. I could not find a job in my area after I graduated so I had to work 45 minutes away from where I lived. It was a pain but it got me experience.
