We've done several of these through here, but not sure if there's one going on at the moment... I love them, and if anyone else is interested, we can set one up on elfster :)

Last year we did an ornament exchange for the holidays and that was so much fun. I loved the one I got.

Another time we did a secret pal that lasted over several months. I think that one fell apart a little bit. I have to admit that I was kind of a lousy pal that time, after the first month. It was around the beginning of school and the holidays and I think things just got crazy for people. So you might think about doing it in a way that people can participate on a month to month basis.

I set up an online ornament exchange, and I would be happy to do the secret pals thing. However, we need to set up some guidelines (how much to spend, how often to send gifts, etc.) Any ideas?

Oh yes:D. I live in Canada though, so with the extra s&h costs, I don't expect my gift to equal the maximum amount of money one can spend.

I think we should have monthly themes and we should do it for Oct., Nov. and Dec. We could start a new one up in February if people are still interested. Gifts can be due the 2nd week of every month. Maybe we can spend $10-15/month.

    Oct. - Halloween
    Nov. - ?
    Dec. - Everything Christmas.

On Elfster there is a section that you can tell your secret pal about yourself - likes/dislikes. It also allows your SP to ask you questions. I'm thinking that we'll let people decide if they want things for the classroom or for themselves.

I've also never done it on AtoZ, but my school does it yearly. This year, we're doing "sister teachers" as we have no men on staff, and it isn't optional or secret. They paired us up by putting us with people we don't usually get to see in the building and each week, we have a theme - classroom management, guided redaing, etc - that we are supposed to spend time discussing.

Not nearly as much fun as getting gifts, I say!

I took part once, but it seemed in general there were some participants who didn't send their gifts and the people matched with them were shorted. My person didn't do that, but I felt bad for those who were generous givers and got nothing from their secret "pals".

I'm in. I already have a great idea for the Halloween theme, if we do that.

I loved the ornament exchange, and I did a secret three-month exchange before that. My person never got her third box, but I swear I sent it. It made me so sad, because it was for her pirate-themed classroom-a HUGE inflatable pirate ship to read in, a pirate Mr. Potato head, etc. Sigh.

I participated in a Secret Pal exchange and got NOTHING at all. Not even one thing in the mail and it went on for 5 months I think! I did do the ornament exchange and I got a wonderful pal!
I just hope that people think about the commitment before signing up.

Okay, so I'm willing to set it up through Elfster, but we need to take a consensus - do we want to do monthly gifts or bi-monthly gifts? Do we want just regular gifts (like things the person likes) or things to do with the classroom?

My preference is regular gifts sent monthly. If ya'll will put down some suggestions, tomorrow I will start another thread with a poll and we can vote there. I think we can have this up and running by October if we work quickly this weekend.

Perhaps the gifts could be for classroom and personal, or the SP could specify which they prefer? Is there a deadline for sending the gift, is there a price limit? sorry for the questions, I didn't participate in the last SP.

I think it should be monthly gifts and each SP should be able to choose if they would like a personal or classroom gift.

gigi, there is usually a deadline for sending the gift.
