Hello everyone! My husband recently was laid off and is out of work making my income the only income. We have 2 children and while we've made significant cuts to our budget, I am considering taking a second job to help make ends meet until my hubby finds a new job (hubby is now Mr. Mom-it eliminates the cost of daycare so please leave him out of it ) My question is, has anyone ever experienced this before? Did you have to let your district or admin know you were taking on a second job or were you able to just keep it on the dl? What about reference checks? Sorry this is long and thanks for any help you can give me!
I wouldnt see why youd have to tell the current job about the second job. As long as it doesnt interfere with the first one. Its none of their business what you do during your time not contracted to work. But on the safe side, I'd rule out stripping or drug dealing.
Haha of course! I'm looking to do something more in the retail industry. I'd just rather keep this on the dl if possible and just wondered if a retail store would call my admin for a reference check in which case I'd have to put them in the loop so they wouldn't be blind sighted.
Could your husband look for something like delivering newspapers in the morning before you go to work? A friend of mine swore by this as a great job since she homeschooled her kids.
I teach adult ESL classes at night. If anything, it has actually enhanced my resume and gotten a few "cool!"s from admin
I've had a second job in the past. I didn't need to tell my school, but there really was no reason to keep it secret either. No one looked down on me or anyone else who worked a second job. As long as we were able to do our job well at school, there were no issues. You will probably need a reference check, but part-time jobs don't usually have strict reference requirements. Give them the name of a co-worker you trust and don't mind telling and/or someone you know from outside of work. It definitely doesn't need to be your principal.
I haven't had a second job while teaching, but my husband is a stay at home dad right now. He's finishing up school-one online class and one night class at a time. He works part-time, just at a retail place to help with money. He only works 5-7pm during the school week and then he works longer hours on the weekends.
My first 2 years teaching I held a second job, mainly to start paying down my loans quicker. I never kept it a secret and it was never an issue and I don't see it being an issue anywhere as long as I made my teaching job my first priority. For example, on occasions where we would have to stay later for parent teacher conferences, I had to take off if I was working my second job that night. As a side note, most retail/restaurant jobs from my experience have never checked references and I have worked plenty since high school and college and if they did, they were fine with former or current colleagues instead of admin.
One of our young teachers is a bartender at one of the family restaurants in the area; it's not at all a secret. She only works weekends, so there's never any interference with school.
I had a second job this year teaching adult ed in a GED-prep program. I only let administration know because I knew they would be called as a reference check. My admin was concerned that it would be "too much to handle" but they were supportive. Could you find tutoring or something like that? Tutoring would pay a lot more than retail, and for a lot less hours. Or are there opportunities for after school programs/clubs/etc. at your current school? Good luck!
When I originally was offered a position at a public school, I also found a second job closing at a local daycare (paid 13.50/hour so it was worth going there for 2-3 hours per day and on the no-school days/breaks (full time in summers)) I did the math and it was an extra $10K per year!
I had a second job for my first six years. They knew and they didn't have a problem with it. It didn't interfere with my duties. I was a receptionist at a car dealership until the economy tanked and I was laid off. Then I worked at a craft store, and spent three miserable years there (sometimes I'd be held at work until 1am). I spent my last year and a half as an accountant at a grocery store. The only time any job usually restricts a second job is when it is with a direct competitor.
Unfortunately, all the esl classes here for adults are on a volunteer basis or aren't currently hiring. Thanks for the suggestion though!
I wish that could be the case for me! Unfortunately, the daycares want you to work more hours and those hours would interfere with my job.
I'll look into the adult ed. The tutoring market here is pretty saturated already and the after school clubs/programs are on a volunteer basis.
