Does this happen to any other science teachers? Kids always come up to me and ask me doctor questions. And not just kids, but other teachers always feel like I'm somehow the expert! Sometimes I know, but I certainly never took any medicine classes. It's just funny to me. Today a kid showed me his nail which was growing funny. I told him ''it's the plague. You'll be dead in 7 days.'' Anyways, does this happen to other science teachers, too?
Yes all the time. I'm a science teach therfor I know about the body (I'm a Chemist). It's more embarrasing as I work in an all girls school! They don't even think of me as male, I'm just a teacher! What I hear would make a sailor blush!
All the time - and I teach physics! I know practically nothing about biology. It really throws the kids off when I explain how I think biology is "gross".
I'm not a science teacher, but the kids think I'm a doctor, nurse, counselor, social worker, etc. We wear so many hats!!!
I've noticed my students tend to ask me a lot of life science and bio questions in my 8th grade physical science class. Of course I know all of the answers because that was my focus in college, but it takes a lot to refrain from just answering the question and reminding them that this is a physical science class and that question is off-topic.
YES! I definitely get that. I am asked to examine injured parts and to diagnose illnesses. I usually give some quick feedback coupled strongly with, "have you told your parents?" and "would you like to visit the nurse?" I remember my first year teaching (it was Biology), a student asked me some of the specifics of his family member's cancer. When I did not know the answer, he was aghast: "but you are a science teacher!"
