I'm figuring out my science center display for the start of school (my 5 senses), and I have everything planned except for sense of taste. I have texture boards, sounds, smells, and objects to look at... but how do I do taste? I don't want the kids to just be able to lick stuff, but I also want them to independently be able to enjoy the science center.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks in advance!
    :) Sarah

Can't you put out something that they can actually eat? Apple slices? Carrots?

Maybe that center will have to be where you can supervise it some. I was going to say could you do like pretzel stick and have them dip 1 stick per thing.... You wouldn't have to do salty they can just eat the pretzel.

Can you place a mirror there so that they can see their taste buds and then showcase the types of taste - sour, sweet, salty, bitter.
Maybe have pictures of various foods and they can place them in boxes/bowls that have the words sour, sweet, salty & bitter.
Example: pictures of a lemon, candy, chips, coffee.

Thank you so much, everyone! I think what I will wind up doing is having a refrigerated plate of lemon slices, apple wedges, pretzels, etc. available and just let 'em have at it.
